Hey.Is it just me or is it fu**ing anoing that you need a big expensive HTPC with Windows Media Center Edition to be able to stream video on the 360?
I was going bye a 360 Desember 2(Launch date Norway) but now i think i wil just go and hang my self instead. But if annyone knows how to get around this dilema pleas post:)

You'll probably be happy to know that WIndows Vista, launchign next year, will have MCE embedded, and all X360 will be able to stream Video from Windows Vista.

The findings in the "Portscanning" thread in the hacking forums look promising. The Xbox uses the UPnP standard for autodiscovery and streaming media, so *in theory* it should be possible to use any device that implements the UPnP MediaServer spec (like MCE) to stream to the X360. However, I wouldn't exactly be alarmed or surprised if the 360 either a) rejects connections from everything but a whitelist of server devices (simple workaround in that case) or b ) uses proprietary extensions/transfer protocol.

I would appreciate it if someone with a 360 and MCE could post some packet dumps. Don't forget multicast.

That's what I thought. Shouldn't it be possible to mimic a mce pc by writing an application that reimplements the protocol used to communicat between the 360 and mce.
If that app could just stream videos (WMV) it would help a lot. Another possibility would be a tool that converts different codes to a wmv in realtime and streams to the box. So - anyone who has MCE an can snoop on the packages?

So does your PC suck or what?

It runs prefectly fine on my machine, and the extender runs fine. I installed the full version of MCE though...

My solution (even though I don't have a 360 yet) was to just plug MCE on a crap spare PC I had handy.  I don't hace a capture card and such in it, MCE runs just fine although I just can't use the PVR functions.Should stream just fine, a fine file/print server I must say.
