I don't know if you still need an answer, but I figured I'd give you my experience.

I believe this is true for older games, but I cannot confirm it for newer games. I have, in the past, system linked stock and exploited consoles with the exploited console being the host and ping patched and had no issues, but it's been a couple of years.
