.ts Or Mpg2 To Wmvhd
« on: November 22, 2006, 12:08:00 PM »

Ok I have messing around with this since the 360 came out and now I can't stop trying since the Dash update.  How can I convert my .TS or MPEG2 (all of these are recorded HD videos 1080i or 720p) to WMV HD to play back off of a DVD or from my PC.

I use HDtoMPEG to convert .TS to MPG format.  So far I have tried Premier Pro, Advanced X Converter, and Windows Media Encoder.  Windows Media Encoder always crashes.  Premier pro take 3 days and seems to fail close to the end of the encode. Advanced X Converter can do it with a Windows media Encoder Profile, but they look like Crap.

Has any one Gotten this to work or know more about encoding HD that could give some step-by-step instructions???

I too messed around with it for a while. Not sure if their is a way. But I did find out how to rip a single .VOB into one file, rename the .VOB to .MPG and it works!!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)  Although, my PC is very outdated, causing the movies to freeze mid way through a movie. (That conversion was done with MCE, I think you wanting the dashboard to utilize WMVHD playback right??) Lemme know if you figure it out.

*I think I was able to rename small .TS files to .MPG and it worked too. Not sure it was a year ago.

for a guide
and

for the first converter program.

Convert .ts to dvr-ms then to wmvhd!

One program you might want to consider, is "Avivo Video Converter".  It was developed by ATI, for use in their X1000 and above GPUs/video cards, however, there is a version that will allow you to use it with pretty much any modern video card.  You must still first convert your .ts/.tp file into a compliant .mpg, or .vob, but it is suprisingly fast for encoding, and you can convert your files to divx, dvd, and even h.264.  The downside is that there are very little options for quality control, but for (fairly) quick and dirty playback, this works well.  On a side note, I use it with an ATI X800XT, which kind of ticks me off, because ATI makes claims that only the X1000 line and above can utililize it, and will "lock" this feature out of the Catalyst software for all other cards besides their newer line, even though my X800XT has proven perfectly capable of using it.

By the way...I have never tested any of these formats on the 360, and have no idea what it can and can't play, but the Avivo encoder does have support for mpeg2 compression, and WMV9, in addition to the formats mentioned in my previous post.

Just load HDTVPump on your PC and your 360 media center will recognize .ts files and you won't have to convert them.  Saves times.

I've used Canopus Procoder 2. It could be seen as overkill as this is a professional program (read:expensive), but it has a clean interface, a wizard conversion mode if you need it, and converts up to 1080p in multiple formats, including WMV-HD.

tikyle I am trying to use do this without using a MCE PC.  I have used that and it works great but I would really like to make it as simple as possible.

mark_in_2k I have tried Procoder 2 and is stalls about 20 seconds in to my video.  I doesnt hang it just stalls and sits there.   I can hit the stop button and it responds, but it will not encode more than 8 seconds of video. I have tried with the wizard and without.

Read this

Method 1 is what you want.

http://www.avsforum....ad.php?t=227837

You may need to read it 10 times cuase it is very tricky and I myself am still having issues but others have gotten it to work.

You should also do a clean install as that is one of the biggest issues, conflicting codecs.

Only a few filters will work together and with wm encoder.

The audio seems to be where I'm screwing up, I'm trying to get wma 5.1 out of DD5.1 and Im getting audio that plays 100x to fast.

Tried out what x64_02 said above,  and it works with 6 ch audio.

The links again TsConverter:

http://dvbportal.dyn1.de/forum/index.php?b...ay;threadid=429

Download here:
http://www.dvbportal.de/projects/tsconverter/

It converts .ts files (HD recordings) and mpg, ifo(DVDs) to dvr-ms files (Media Center mpeg files)

The cool thing is that Windows Media Encoder "Loves" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) dvr-ms files, and will convert them as you like.
and wme works like it should with these files "Fast".

So this is my guide:

1. convert to dvr-ms with TsConverter
2. convert to wmvhd using windows media ecoder..

Its the easies solution I've found, many thanks to x64_02 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Edit: You don't need a MCE PC to use this metod or to play the files...

Willy

Well I was looking for this for some time. I noticed that the dvr-ms has a bit of trails every couple of seconds . it just doesnt look the same. Also WME errors while compiling.

What am I missing??
