Netbsd/xbox360/mce Mod

The quick & dirty guide to get a Unix Shell on your 360, using the MCE mod.

What you need?
Xbox 360 networked to MCE 2005
Xbox Controller/Remote

1) First make sure your xbox is working correctly with MCE 2005. Try viewing pictures/videos as a test. Also make sure the MCE 2005 computer is connected to the internet.

2) Download and install java onto your MCE computer.
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

3) From your MCE computer, go here and create a free unix shell account. Make sure you understand their terms & conditions. http://freeshell.org/

4) Thanks goes to SilentWatcher. Using his guide, make this link. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=464433

<application url="http://sdf.lonestar.org/ssh/" name="NetBSD Unix Shell">

5) Call the file, something like Ex. NetBSD Unix Shell.mcl. Save the file in, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Center\Media Center Programs

6) Launch Media Center on your 360. Go to More Programs select NetBSD Unix Shell. Wait tell it loads, then a warning box will appear. Using your remote press the OK button. Now Switch to your controller. Accept all options by pressing the A button. When its asks for a username/password, press Y for a keyboard. Input your information, then press A to accept.

7) Enjoy being logged into a remote NetBSD Unix Shell. Use Y, to input your commands. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Really looking forward to the Free60 Project, tell then I hope this helps.

If I made any mistakes post, this is a quick & dirty guide anyway. This works thanks to java based applications. It would be cool to see a full blown linux desktop using something like this, http://www.workspot.net/cgi/demo.cgi
I tried, but the interface sucks. Is there a way to click the create desktop button? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That's some real inventive thinking, there. Good work!

Thanks. Even though its a little hard to type commands using a controller, it works quite well. smile.gif

I haven't tried any others yet, but there are loads of other java based app's that may work.

Google Maps?
GBA Emulator? (http://www.gameboymu...gba_emu_online/)
IRC Client? (http://searchirc.com)
Virus Scanning? (http://housecall60.t.../start_corp.asp)
Web Browsers? (http://www.dejavu.org/)
If Google/Sun makes a web based StarOffice?

So if anyone is interested, you probably could find more unique uses for the MCE mod. But remember the interfaces isn't great or doesn't work at all.

Cheers;

This mod could be useful to those trying to run unsigned code by reverse engineering the 360. Good work!

Very nice- if we had some way to control the mouse with the remote, it would be possible to run a great deal of browser apps in this way. I tried MyRemoteMouse (http://www.whittaker...RemoteMouse.htm) but I could not launch it from the 360.
