Hi guys, a friends ms25 is only reading music cd's now after flashing from ixtreme 1.4 12x to 8x, how can I fix this, I have tried going back to 12x but still no dice, need help quick if possible .

Wrong flash... I think you put the wrong key in.

If you have the correct key it should read the games again.

If you lost the console-dvd key you are screwed :/

is there anyway to get the right dvd key back?

I used the dvd key that was in the firmware already

As long as you have a backup of the key that was on the drive before you flashed it you will be fine. If not then you will need to buy a new 360.

i've got the original key, haven't changed the key so can't be the wrong key ;P

now I have got it to saying unreadable disc on everything apart from music cd's when I put pressure on top of the drive.

we did pot tweak last night, but didn't get anywhere, maybe try it again??

Also, before anything else, I had only backed up the firmware not flashed it, so once again, the key can't be wrong

ok I am confused. How did you flash different speeds firmware without flashing anything?

Anyway as long as you have a backup then you should be fine.

Does retail games work?

Try to flash back the original firmware and see if the originals work.

sorry, my bad, before I did anything, all I did was just backup the firmware before anything else, when I plugged it in, all I would get was the open tray erro, on games, movies but not music cd's, so I flashed to a lower speed firmware but still same problem, found original ms25 firmware online, injected original key, same problem, now I have gotten it to the point where it will say unreadable disc if I put a bit of pressure on it, this happens on all discs except music

update! it will read anything off of cd but not dvd.

thinking that maybe just the drive is cactus.

You need a new laser...

Either buy a new laser or a new drive.

thanks for the help guys, I think his xbox is on it's last legs anyhow, his video can't even output component properly, it makes all the colours have a green tinge over them.

I have had both issues, laser needed replacing when my drive would only read music cd's and I had the green issue with mine which turned out to be the cable.

tried different cables with it already so we've ruled them out, but he isn't really concerned about that at the moment lol, just wants it playing

would there be any benefit of say inserting his dvd key to another firmware (xtreme 4.2) and flashing with DOSFLASH, any chance of something working like that? maybe dosflash reads and writes the firmware differently?

Its not a firmware issue you have a mechanical problem with the drive. Flashing wont fix the problem.

You can try tweaking the laser.. thats the only free fix I can suggest.

Havok is right, its a laser problem. Firmware flashing will not fix it.

DVD drive's have two separate pot's on the laser, one for CD, one for DVD. DVD uses a different frequency than CD's and has a smaller laser which makes reliable reading hard. The laser is on its way out, and it can read CD's quite fine as the laser is less suspectable to error's
