360 Firmware Hack

By useless I mean won't boot even original games or anything at all, and it isn't like you could just send it back to MS because then they'd know what you had done.
MS won't do that simply because they want to make money with you. If you can't play the games for their system after they patch it, they make that much less plus they lose a customer. On a global scale, that would seriously hurt the 360. They're losing money as it is with the consoles. They make their money back plus a profit with software. The worst that the update/patch will do is render the firmware hack useless.

since its only a firm ware hack, i wonder if they could place code to return it back to its original self , or update the firm ware through games like some kind of auto installer , embeded in a game???? that would be weird. maybe there is a way to flash protect the the firmware chip, in some sort of bypass much like the original xbox ?

still prety cool thanks hackers jester.gif

Μicrosoft COULD do this, but they most likely wouldn't because they wouldn't want a class action lawsuit to worry about on top of all the problems they're already having with Xbox 360s.

i personaly beleive this firmware hack is lame. If you are a responsible enough person, and take care of your own investments, the need for backups are not ever going to arise. And if your worried about the ever hypothetical situation where a backup was needed or required, then your going to be conserned for quite a while becuse eventually your going to encounter a situation where your going to own some form of data that cant be preserved in the form of a backup or a copy may it be legal or illegal. My best advise for you is to not allow anyone who isnt responsible enough of a person to take care of your possessions to have access to them, and if you arnt a responsible enought of a person to take care of your own possessions then i guess your fucked from the get go.

Ok, so I have been reading about the firmware hack for the 360 DVD drive. say you go through with it (if it's released of course) and change your firmware....well if MS were to release some sort of patch via live (if they could) or even in games, would that render your Xbox 360 useless or would it just make it where you couldn't play backups anymore? By useless I mean won't boot even original games or anything at all, and it isn't like you could just send it back to MS because then they'd know what you had done. Please help answer my question if you wouldn't mind as I'm curious as to how this all would work, because I'd love to be able to backup my existing games to avoid damaging them and losing that $60 investment, but not at the risk of losing the investment in the more expensive Xbox 360 hardware. Thanks in advance for the help and responses!

From what i understand they ARE able to reflash your firmware if the need arises via live, HOWEVER they may not want to risk it due to the fact that if there are any problem's during the flashing process your xbox 360 is now an expensive paperweight (since replacement dvd drives for the 360 arnt readily available and from what i understand there is a unique key tieing the dvd drive the the specific console (someone correct me if im wrong), also from what i have read i dont believe one of the drive's has a bios recovery chip built in not sure if it was the sammy or hitachi drive), say for instance the power goes out while doing the update via live even if your console doesnt have hacked firmware and the update is still required to log onto live the console is now bricked. Id have the say that if they did 'detect' that you have hacked firmware they will find way's to begin imposing bans so that consoles w/ hacked firmware are no longer able to go on live, similar to how they banned people w/ modchips with the orginal xbox

well there's my 2 cents on the topic if i am wrong w/ any aspect of the post feel free to correct me

while i do support the hack (for backups purposes - not piracy) i started to believe this could never happen cus as the specialist say it is a little complex for the average guy out there, now surfing through the net i found this post about the hack.:

Xbox 360 H4xx0rz admit their hackjob is useless

so maybe is useless for the average guy, but not for those who got access to a chip programer  smile.gif

team xecuter making this process very simple. They are manufacturing a kit that you will connect the dvd drive to your computer and load the firmware through windows. Could it get any easier?

I do agree it would be useless if you took care of your discs , but life can always screw that up

imo , backups are fine if you own the original , but if you're just using copies of games you rented/downloaded that you dont own an original for... then it's not fine

I might do the DVD hack , but the only way I know of to backup my games is by downloading em , and since I have no other people playin around with my originals (other than myself of course) I see no reason to have backups yet

now when we can run backups off HDD... then I'm jumpin for it

The 'take care of your originals theory' is always nice but I assure every single person out there that having children will instantly change that.  I confess that I didn't get it either but my son is 2 1/2 now and let me tell you that the last year has been a struggle to keep my stuff from being destroyed (and he is considered very well behaved by any reasonable standard).

I had to buy stereo rack/cabinet with a smoked glass front that I had to tape closed.  The DVDs and games were put on the top shelf far out of his reach - right up until he learned to push his little chairs and table over and create a psuedo-platform to reach them after which he takes them out of the case and you find them with food, gunk, and scratches all over them.  And he watches like a hawk if you relocate them, takes note of the new location, and then instantly begins work on getting them again.  If you leave even one out for a minute and take your eyes off it, he has them (remember they are the "keys" to their favorite characters and fun stories on the television).

Suffice to say, XviD encoding for streaming and baking up your games suddenly become very important to you even if you are a Type A freak who has never misplaced or scratched a DVD/CD in his life (and that would be fairly close to me).  No doubt some things will get ruined no matter what you do but you can minimize a lot of impact by taking your originals and storing them away.  That way you don't come home to find three or four retail games ($200) serving as railway or an elaborate crash control system for Thomas the Train when mom was making dinner in the next room.
