Yes, check your LayerBreak setting.

In the Tools tab.  Then the Write tab.

layer break for XGD2 is 1913760

layer break for XGD3 is 2133520

You have to watch that stuff closely.  Check it with each write.
And I recommend a write speed of 2.4

I had it on optimal, the .dvd file contained '2133520'...

So I assume that's what it was already writing at....?

I've backed up 2 other XGD3 games now and they boot up but fail at some point in the game...usually a loading screen or something after the main menu or opening scene. Tried 2 360's.

Type in the Laybreak assignment physically

Only other advice is maybe Burnermax doesn't work with Pioneer.
You might have to go with Burner Payload FW

Thanks man, what new drives available cheaply online are recommended for use with the Burner Payload FW?

In UK.

Edit: Ah, I understand now, even though my Pioneer is compatible with BurnerMax, that doesn't mean it will produce good XGD3 backups. I just assumed because it worked with the took, then it should have been good. I will now stop wasting verbs...

How about this:

LiteOn IHAS124-04

Lite On IHas is the bomb.

124, 224 , 324, 424  ... any of that.  Just make sure of Rev B in the model number.  Rev B - Hugely important

Further advice can be found at Team Xecuter and Ixtreme web sites.
They have the full info

Burner Payload Tool might work with your Pioneer.  You'll have to check the list

thank you. I can't seem to find it online anywhere, Are there any other revisions or burners that are just as good? Paying $60 or more on eBay is bs. If it is just the firmware, can it be flashed to rev b firmware?
