EDIT: My TV will not take HDMI-A.... it will only take HDMI-D inputs. So since this converts it to a digital signal, then perhaps there is hope.
There's no such thing as HDMI-A. There's DVI-I which carries VGA signals over certain pins of the DVI connector but that part was never brought in to the HDMI standard because it's pointless.

vga to dvi is how the pimps do it those converters are like 2-3 bucks
Only works if your TV/display takes DVI-I and not just DVI-D, plus as said above it's just VGA on a different connector. Not digital, no gains over straight VGA.

You're the one who purchased a 4:3 HDTV set. Who's the idiot?
Quoted for truth. I've never seen why 4:3 HDTV sets were ever made. 720p and the 1080s are standardized ONLY at 16:9. HDTV is by definition 100% pure widescreen only, buying a 4:3 HDTV was a dumb choice.
