1080p Over Vga

If your TV supports 1080p, You should be able to use it with VGA

It doesn't hurt to try, though you lose money by getting a VGA cable but some people say it looks nicer, one of them is me.

Updating with a flashed drive isn't going to hurt you
I have a Flashed Samsung and I just updated to the Spring Update yesterday w/ 5.2c. Works fine.
