If its not widescreen on VGA I dont think it will be widescreen on component either.  Also, you should set the resolution to the CLOSEST to that if your TV which is not necessarily 1280x720.  European HDTVs for example at 1366x768 so 1360x768 is the resolution best for us.

Unfortunately I do not have Halo 2 so I cannot comment further except that you should go some searches as I have heard this problem mentioned before, I think you have to have the 360 in very specific settings for it to work.
