if you goto panasonic website and look at its PX500 plasma unit its labled as HDTV (not HDTV compatible but  true HDTV) so its not just resllers that claim it as HD but manufacturers as well. i guess as far as 1024x768p go its opinion. but for me its that i really can't see the difference between the 2 on my systems.

1024X768 is not true HD , which is not to say that it still cannot look great ( even a 480p display that is fed HD can look good , better than SD/ED even though it is being down scaled to ED ) .  Companies are able to get around the term HDtv because a 768p display can do 720p (just not in a native 16:9 fashion) .

Consider here that if you are sending a 1024X768 display a 1280X720 signal then there is down scaling being done . While the display can resolve 720 in a native fashion it cannot resolve 1280 . Then also consider that if a 4:3 (1024x768) display is having to scale a 16:9 (1280x720) signal it is losing even more resolution in order to have a correct 16:9 aspect ratio .

i understand what you are saying, but honestly you don't really see the difference if both units are calibrated properly. so i personally consider 1024x768p HD cause i have tested it thoroughly with my projector and LCD and find that if there is a difference its minor. but we should all remember that picture quality is just as much in the video processor as it is the resolution. i have seen shoot outs where EDTV's have beaten HD so i guess resolution is really only half the battle for high quality displays.
