Well upconverting is very different the natively supporting a particular resolution. As for the Xbox360 doing better than TV conversions... I would imagine it would vary from manufacturer to manufacturer... but the 360 will 'probably' do better conversions of it's own games because it's built SPECIFICALLY for that.

If we take AA out of the picture (assuming the next to nothing performance hit is true)

we can look at straight up resolutions....

technically speaking 720p is 60FPS while 1080i is 30FPS (60 fields per sec)

at 1280x720 60FPS 720p is pushing 55296000 pixels a second

at 1920x1080 30FPS 1080 is pushing 73728000 pixels a second

So even at half the frame rate 1080i is pushing 18432000 more pixels a second

If we figure that most games will run at 30FPS regardless of the resolution 1080i/p resolutions will always be more demanding.

at 30FPS the % difference (in raw pixels per second) between 480i/p and 720p is the same as the difference between 720p and 1080i/p.... 150%

AFAIK the digital video signal used in DVI and HDMI is identical. such that you could simply get a straight through converter to change between one and the other.

The difference is DVI also has the ability to carry analog video as well as digital video. And as you said HDMI carries digital audio as well as digital video.

Personally I like using DVI and an optical audio connection over HDMI. My Surround system is completely separate from my display so it doesn't make much sense sending my audio and video in the same cable unless it was going into a receiver that would break out the signals for me.

With that said, looking at the REAL specs, it doesn't seem like that display supports any digital inputs... it's HD support is limited to VGA/RGB and component.

The Xbox360 wont support digital at launch but you'd be best to future-proof your display by making sure it does.
