you'll need to play on the harder difficulties to get the gold (hard) and platinum (hardcore) achievements.

The sticky topic covers how to do most of the other achievements.

If you finished EVERY race on Silver, you should have received the achievements for Steel and Bronze. I finished the game on Bronze and got the Steel achievement with it. So no, you shouldn't have to do it again on a lower difficulty. Keep moving up.
