With THQs recent announcement that the fourth release in the heralded MotoGP franchise will lean onto the Xbox 360 this May, we felt it was a good time to share a few juicy tidbits on the game.
Despite the somewhat lukewarm popularity of the MotoGP racing circuit amongst folks in North America, theres little doubt that the games that have graced the Xbox have arguably been the best of the racing genre. The visuals have been stellar on the current-gen tech, and while having a steep learning curve, the controls are eerily representative of the sport. MotoGP 3 was the pinnacle on the Xbox, with an all-new Extreme mode and enhanced online play, but wait to you see what is in store for the Xbox 360.
While Project Gotham Racing 3 has garnered the most praise for its graphical prowess, the Climax team may knock MSs racer from its perch. Weve been told that MotoGP 2006 is, at the very least, five times more visual flash and detail than MotoGP 3. From the recently released screenshots, its easy to concur with that statement.
Making extensive use of the Xbox 360s shaders, youll see layers upon layers of detail, not only for the bikes and riders, but also to depict the courses in a nearly photorealistic manner. The draw distance is amazing, showcasing the large crowds that attend MotoGP races. Lighting techniques are another area where Climax is flexing their muscle. There will be many more variations in the time of day for the races, meaning youll notice things like light blooms, new shadow casting effects, and much more.
MotoGP 2006 wouldnt be complete without the full roster of riders and bikes, but they take on a sense of personality due to the staggering detail. Youll see riders suits flex accordingly, every individually modeled piece of each bike, and we havent even touched on the audio portion. Climax has recorded a bevy of clips from various parts of each bike, meaning a Yamaha is going to sound far different than a Honda or Ducati.
The game will include much of what weve enjoyed so much in previous versions, including a revamped Racing Career mode, complete with all the tracks from the 05 season, plus the new ones for the upcoming 06 season. Time trials return, as does the Extreme mode also with a few new tracks. With so many beautiful road stretches to choose from, we have a feeling that gamers are going to flock the Extreme mode this time. Ah, and dont forget about the Challenges, as they are back and just as difficult as ever.
THQ is keeping things hush-hush when it comes to MotoGP 2006s online features, aside from the fact that it will support up to 20 players on Xbox Live on GP courses, and 16 players in Extreme mode.
With a May release, we should have a ton of new info and impressions on MotoGP 2006 in the near future, so keep it right here at TeamXbox.com. In the meantime, check out the ten new in-game shots (yes, not pre-rendered) that have just been released.
