Epic boss Apologizes over Custom GoW Munny Threats
Posted by XanTium | March 11 12:26 EST | News Category: Xbox360

The guys over at gamespy.com got a reply from Epic boss Mark Rein about the 'Cease and Desist letter Epic sent over a Custom Gears of War Munny':
Quote

Ugh. Our lawyers are trying to do their job and protect our trademarks but I guess they didn't realize this wasn't a commercial project and
they fired off a standard form letter. It is unfortunate when this happens but the problem with trademarks is you HAVE to protect them and Emilio's work looks so amazingly professional, right down to a cool package!, that they probably failed to notice this was a one-off gift for non-commercial use. What we need to do is come up with some sort of permission letter for things like these so that we're properly protecting our future commercial rights but not stopping people from doing cool fan art like this.

On behalf of Epic I apologize to Emilio and anyone who was offended by this.

Did i call it or what, allow me to quote myself from the previous thread (page 2)

"Wow. This is really sad. I am hoping that someone really stupid at epic didn't understand that this was a 1 of a kind toy and was not being re-sold. Hoping next story on x-scene is apology letter from epic. "

I can see Epic's side and really in a way it was a huge compliment to Emilio. His work was so proffesional looking they Epic though he was a threat.

Happy ending. Epic should send him some swag.

It wasn't Epic, it was their lawyers.

Im really happy to hear that this was nothing more than a mistake on Epic's behalf. I was really disappointed with Epic when reading the article. I held them in the same category as "SONY" until this apology.

It's nice to see some humility from a big company.  We never really see that these days....

Mark Rein,  Thanks for realizing someone in your company has done wrong, and setting them straight.  We appreciate you taking the time to make a formal apology.

Perhaps you can give Emilio Lopez a free game or two, or perhaps a job...    That munny looks really cool.
