Question About Hdtv Playback On Xbmc
« on: December 09, 2003, 04:06:00 AM »

I am going to soon be purchasing a new HDTV. The only problem is, it WILL NOT SUPPORT
720p. I don't even think it will upscale it:(  Can the output res be set with HDTV playback?
Ie, can I upscale Divx/Xvid files to 1080i?

I know Divx/Xvid are already HEAVILY compressed but I would like to at least utilize
some HDTV support from XBMC.

Yes, XBMC can output (and upscale) any video to 720p or 1080i.  There is little (or no) performance hit for this as it is done entirely in hardware.

Note that 720p will generally give you better quality with XBMC, as we use hardware overlays for the video + pictures which means only 540 lines in 1080i (effectively 1920x540 resolution), whereas 720p gets the full vertical resolution (1280x720).
