Need Help With Mtu Problem
« on: June 21, 2007, 08:53:00 AM »

Hi and thank you in advance for your help.

I just got the XBOX 360 2 days ago and have followed tutorials found in this site as well as in the net and xbox website with no luck.

I have shared my wireless connection with the local lan. changed the local lan IP adress and DNS and my Live Test fails at MTU even though my router says its at 1492.  If i connect it directly to my router it works just fine but I have to run a 50ft. cable around the apt. which sucks. I already have a PC connected to my tv and home theater with a wireless connection and the following is the setup:

I have a DSL 2WIRE HOME PORTAL 1800HW
Router Address:  192.168.1.254
Subnet Mask:      255.255.255.0
DHCP Range:     192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.252

A PVR with a shared wireless connector
IP Address:         192.168.1.3
- with an ethernet port connected to my XBOX 360
IP Address:         192.168.0.99
DNS:                  192.168.1.254

XBOX 360 Automatic settings
IP Address:         192.168.0.173
Subnet Mask:      255.255.255.0
Gateway:            192.168.0.99
Primary DNS:      192.168.0.99

I have tried changing the routers address to 192.168.1.1 and also entered the XBOX 360s info manually with the same results MTU fail.

What exactly is your situation? If I read correctly you're running a 50 ft. ethernet wire through the aprt. to you xbox 360, from your router? Then after that, you say you're trying to I guess run your 360 through a wireless DSL portal?

Is there a config for that wireless portal you are using? Such as with your router you can go to 192.168.0.1 for its http config page, can you do sort of the same with that portal? You need to somehow make the wireless connection run between 1365 + 1500 for MTU.

Good luck.

It works if its wired hence the 50ft. cable.

But I have it setup connected to a pc via ethernet port and the pc is connected wireless to the router. See below:

ROUTER>>>>>>>PC---------XBOX 360

>>>>>> Wireless
----------  Wired

And as I said before my router already reads 1492 MTU.

NEVER MIND IT WAS ZONE ALARM!  Anyone know how to make it work with the firewall or maybe another free firewall that allows ICS?

I'm going to try some stuff, I'll get back to you with some answers, I have a laptop, with a wireless connection, and a NIC that I'll hook my 360 to, and I got zonealarm on it too. I'll see what I can do, I've gotten it to work just with a bridge in XP, I'll try to get it to work with zonealarm and give you my pointers in a bit.

Ok, I figured it out, I got it to sign into Xbox Live with the firewall settings on high. And no, it's not limiting who the xbox 360 can talk to, I even went into halo 2 and did a couple of big team matches to make sure it all worked.

You need to open the control panel by double-clicking the Zone-Alarm icon in the system tray. Then go into the firewall tab, then click the custom button in the Internet Zone Security box. Then click the check-box next to "Allow Incoming UDP ports:" + "Allow Outgoing UDP ports:" and for each one enter port 3074. Then click apply and exit that box. Now go to the Expert tab of the firewall menu. Then click Add... in the name text field name it 'Xbox Live'.Iin the Track pull down list on the right, set it to none. Then in the source box select any, then click modify, and go to Add location, then click IP Address. Now name it XBL and put in the IP address of your xbox 360 and click OK. Now in that source box still, click modify again and add location again, now click internet zone. That should add internet zone in the source box, and now click OK, then hit APPLY on the lower right corner.

You should now be able to connect to Xbox Live through the ZoneAlarm Firewall.

If you still cannot connect, it's something wrong with your network bridge in XP. Or you have some other settings on your computer/zonealarm/XP firewall that are hindering it from connecting.

Good luck.

ok so what i believe is you have the 360 wired to a PC, and a PC making wireless connected to a router.

(360)--------(PC with XP)  *       *       *     * (wireless router)

is the network cable you have connecting the PC and 360 a crossover cable, if not go to radioshack and tell them you need one.
also, i have my 360 set to automatic setting, my PC firewall set to the default settings, and ICS turned on
thats how i have my setup in my bedroom. no probs for me
