Alright, What Application Can Play A Vcd?
« on: December 20, 2002, 01:27:00 PM »

I read that XBMP can, but right from the disc in the Xbox? If I can read VCDs right from the disc in the Xbox, do I need to flash my Matrix with a eject trick BIOS then?

Thanks guys

From what's been posted, it seems that it DOESN'T support true VCD playback.

It only allows you to navigate to the DAT files and play those as MPEG2 files. Seems kind of odd, but I don't have time to dig into their code and fix it :( If it isn't fixed in the next couple of weeks, I'll try and find the time to fix it.

That's not true VCD/SVCD support.

Why is it so hard to get an app that understands the ISO9660 format, and can supposedly play the DAT file, to do so automatically?

Quote from xbmp forums about vcd/svcd comptability:

-------------------------------

The directory / file structure is accessible because they are written as 2048 byte Mode 1 sectors but the actual content is written in 2352 byte Mode 2 sectors which is inaccessible.

Hope that makes sense; it was a bit disappointing for me having gone through the lengths of incorporating ISO9660 file system support.

But the upshot is, unless any XBOX coders want to write a driver I doubt you'll see the "true" VCD/SVCD support coming quickly.

Gotcha.

So the Xbox drive doesn't like Mode 2 discs... hmmmmm.... I hope it's not a limitation with the drive firmware, but you can't put it past M$ to do something like that.

EDIT: DOH! Wait just a SECOND! Redbook audio uses 2352 byte sectors, and we KNOW that the Xbox can to DAE. It should be possible to access the data directly, though it may require the app to re-init the drive into another mode to recognize the new sector size.
