Homemade Hdd Connector

Is there a tutorial that shows how to connect a WD BEVS to the xbox without using an existing hdd case? And without opening the xbox?

I've searched the forum but I was only able to find things that connect a 360 hdd to a PC.

http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EE...AuAvYzogUgm.php

You need to make something similar. I guess the inverse of this so the end can connect to the pins of the xbox.

What I did was get the refurb 20gb from here for 30$ http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/hddoffer/default.htm

hes looking to do the exact opposite.  use a hdd on the 360, w/out getting the enclosure.

as far as im aware, theres not a way of doing this w/out opening the console.

it is possible, i've done it, i was to affraid to remove the mobo from the metal box, i was affraid that i might move the heatsinks and cause a rrod so i decided i shall build a female hdd connector.

<a href="http://img517.images...2008012nh9.jpg" target="_blank">Result</a>
<IMG src="http://img517.images...008012nh9.jpg">

tutorial, the measurements are converted to imperial from metric so not very accurate:
parts needed:
-soldering iron
-hot glue gun
-superglue/loctite/acrylic (30 sec strong glue)
-4x USB female connectors for the spring type metal connector blades inside, since the xbox has a male connector we shall build a female one
-test pcb (prototype board)
-file,dremel

procedure:
1. get a piece of pcb (test pcb with holes, not too thick
2. file the metal away leave only the plastic/glass fibre whatever
3. cut and file margins to get a rectangle about 1" wide and 2-3" long
4. file away on the width until it fits the hdd connector
5. insert it in the connector (about 1/2"), with a pencil draw a transversal line of how deep eill it go
6. cut it at about 1/4" from that line (it should stick out for 1/4" from the connector)
7. do steps 5 and 6 again (for the power side)
8. insert one of the two pieces and in VERY good lighting conditions draw lines (perpendicular on the first line) where the pins are (the upper alnd lower pins are on the same lines)
9. destroy 4 female usb connectors, remove the metal connectors from inside by pulling on the solder side, 4 from each connector shall give you abaout 16 metal connectors
10. VERY CAREFULLY glue (superglue/loctite works ok) each metal connector OVER the corresponding line on the pcbs, taking care that is should NOT be longer than the PCB
11. stick some insulation over
12. insert carefully by pressing with a small screwdriver/needle on the stuck metal connectors to make them enter the connector, but do not force it!
13. bend all the metal connectors' ends away from the middle
14. solder the wires to the sata part and the power part (get pinouts for sata and xbox 360 hdd connector on google) each wire goes to the corresponding pin
15. cover with hotglue
16. enjoy smile.gif

good luck

PS: it took me a bit over 4 hours to complete, i used a giant abrasive rock from a special machine (polisor) to file out the copper from the pcb and slim a little the pcb and a normal file to adjust the pcb size (3 hours), work slow, keep checking the size it should be pretty stiff, no lateral space between the pcb and the xbox connector walls, round a bit the angles that go inside), 1 hour to glue all the 13 contacts ( do not connect the +5V DC STANDBY to the drive, connect only the three +5 and three GND) and 2 hours to solder and cover in glue, file the cover and mount the hdd.
I cut all the grey plastic under the hdd, left only the part from the front up to the step (where it should go under the normal hdd), about 1/2" to the back to keep the hinges, i filled the interior part of the outer grey plastic to fit the drive under, the inner plastic won't fall cause it has two hinges(upper and lower) and the outer part will be stay there having the back on the white plastic and on the front the rest of the ex inner plastic.

I’ve made one using above method and its working. A slight modification: I didn’t remove all copper side. Instead I “carved” 7 pads and on top of these I soldered spring type metal connector blades.
