no you cant use a usb hdd as the main one atm but you can if you have esata on it add a esata cable to the xbox hdd port and run it a a stock form there

you dont need a xbox offical hdd btw you can use any laptop hdd and just format it on the xbox or with a bit of easy modding use a pc hdd with it

but if you dont want to do any of that you can run xexmenu off the cd every time i would say that would get very annoying
and you can use a memory card to but you can get much on them

the xbox hdd connector is not a standard hdd port

you couldnt then use it as a normal hdd as well as xbox hdd btw so it probably not worth doing it
(it will act like a standard xbox hdd in the xbox format)
