Can You Play 1080p Divx W/ 5.1 Audio On Xbox 360?
« on: August 20, 2009, 06:13:00 AM »

Ave,

Well my first question is, can you play a high quality (10mbps) 1080p DivX w/ 5.1 Surround Sound on XBOX 360?

Currently I encode MKV's -> WMV-HD's using ChrisLynch's guide here; copy them to my External USB HDD which is attached to my XBOX 360 and play the videos off of that.

If however you are able to play high quality 1080p DivX w/ 5.1 Surround using the same method, I'm wondering if it would be faster to encode an MKV -> DivX-HD rather then MKV -> WMV-HD.

Any inputs?

You can always do MKV->MP4 which is pretty fast and has no drop in quality, I'm not sure about the 5.1 sound though. You can check out Gotsent

MP4 is a no-go because of 5.1; Can't have 6 channel sound in the MP4 Container to play on XBOX 360. That's why thus far the only option I've seen is WMV-HD; but I'm not sure where DivX-HD stands in all of this.

I myself use Mp4 (H264) with 2.1 stereo AAC as audio
Looks like DIVX support is only 720p

Acc. to me DIVX doesn't look that great on 360, no matter what resolution, H264 is much better especially since 720p H264 rips are around 1.5 GB
You could always try it out yourslef

Well 6 Channel audio is important for me which is why MP4 is a no-go for me; but I do agree with you, I've been looking around & I guess general consensus seems to be that h.264 or VC1, both look far better then any DivX Quality.

I guess I'll stick to my WMV-HD VC1 profiles.

Thanks guys.

You could convert the mkv's to AVCHD, then stream it to your 360 (have to have windows 7 i think)

You'd have to use media centre, theres a guide on the net somewhere, works pretty well
