Microsoft is launching a music streaming service this month

The service, which Microsoft aims to have ready by the end of July, will offer users the chance to stream music for free and also download to own.

Peter Bale, executive producer of MSN, Microsoft's news and entertainment portal, told The Telegraph exclusively: "Music is an important area for Microsoft. We are looking at launching a music streaming service imminently.
It will be a similar principle to Spotify but we are still examining how the business model will work."

Spotify users can stream music for free in exchange for listening to around a minute of advertising every half hour but for £9.99 a month, the ads will be turned off. It is thought Microsoft's offering will be ad-supported too as well as having a paid-for premium service.

He also hinted the service could be tied in with Microsoft's Xbox gaming console, but would not be drawn on the details of how a partnership would work. The addition of a Microsoft-owned music streaming service would tie in with an increasingly consumer focussed strategy from company to make its Xbox 360 console the main "entertainment hub" in the family home. Users are already able to download movies through their console and play games against one another online.

ok, cool.

additional services & features are always welcome,
& this sounds pretty good to me.

1min of ad's/half hr sounds fine to me.

if this music service is as stated in the above story, then it will be another feature i'll be looking forward to smile.gif

Whats the chances of being able to listen to this and play games ?

I personally am not a music collector and really only listen when its on a radio if you know what i mean. Yea i know I could be a FM radio and just mix it into my mic's ear piece or stereo but this would be nice to have..

It would be awesome if this came to the 360, offered alot of different bands / genres and could be listened to when playing games.

On the other hand, if this is only for PC, then meh - Spotify is all I need there.

Instead of just giving us one streaming music service why not give us a full internet radio interface to meet all people music tastes.

Last FM, from what I understand, does not have the option of download to own.

How about a Zune pass type deal?

Streaming sucks, I would rather have a pay-per-song model.  I don't want to keep paying every month without guaranteed access to the music I like.  For that, I'd probably have to subscribe to multiple streaming services.  I'd rather just pay less and just buy the songs I want, keep them, use them anywhere on any device I want.  This is really limited.

I am a little confused too about the Last.FM thing too... did they decide not to go that route and just make their own?  It seems like a better idea for MS and you know they have the resources to do such a thing.

How can you tell this is really limited when they haven't released any of the details?  Paying less to just buy the songs you want to use them on any device anywhere sounds really limited too, I want them to implant a device in my brain and have it automatically detect the songs I want to hear and play it for me right inside my head so no one else can hear it.  Oh and also make me think I am fishing or relaxing when I am really working.

"He also hinted the service could be tied in with Microsoft's Xbox gaming console,"

I'd say pretty high.
