Streaming Music From A Linux Server
« on: May 02, 2009, 08:57:00 PM »

I, too, have also been searching for a way to stream my media from my Linux server (using Samba).  However, I did a little searching around the forums, and notice that someone made a comment referencing the multimedia FAQ stating that Samba shares will not work.  After looking at the FAQ again, it doesn't say anything in there about Samba shares working or not.

Well, I got it working  biggrin.gif

I did a little searching on the net and found a program called TwonkyMedia. It's not free, but it comes with a 30 day free trial. Works great! Soooo nice to free up all those mp3's on the server and have them blasting through the surround sound system  smile.gif

From the FAQ

QUOTE

Q: Is it possible to stream these files over a network?
A: Certainly. It can be streamed the same way as other media files, with MediaPlayer 11, Zune software, from Windows Home Server, or almost any UPnP media server (eg: Xbox1 running a current build of XBMC, UPnP/DLNA enabled NAS, UPnP pc server such as Twonkymedia or Tversity etc), or using Windows Media Connect 2. Microsoft has dropped support for Windows Media Connect, but it is still a viable option for streaming from your PC. Although it is not linked on their site any longer you can still download it HERE from MS servers. Samba shares do not work.
