Toshiba Corporation has decided to withdraw from next generation high-definition DVD production.

The company said it will continue to sell HD-DVD products for a while but will stop further development of HD DVD. Meanwhile, it said its DVD factories in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, would be closed.

Market observers said that Toshiba could suffer a loss of hundreds of millions of US dollars.

I'm just going to wait for the Xbox "720". Until then, I’ll be renting HD movies with my 360. tongue.gif

Well,
That's all she wrote!

Guess I will be adding a PS3 to my collection after all.  I've planned on it for a while but this makes me even more likely.

Really? I'm not so sure. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray sales still pale in comparison to DVD sales - that seems to indicatethe consumer doesn't really care so much about next gen formats. Granted, this may push people to adopt the format - I'm still not so sure this warrents the massive uptake of the PS3.

People will buy the consoles primarily for games - not for its DVD/Blu-Ray (Goodbye to HD-DVD playback included here) capabilities. I wouldn't expect Blu-Ray to increase in popularity until players drop to a reasonable price - which will be a while off anyway - so I can't see it boosting PS3 sales by too much at all. There will be definately be a small increase in sales, though I don't predict a large one. (Of course I'm just a regular bloke guessing, But We will see biggrin.gif ).

Its only a matter of time before Microsoft come out with a blu-ray accessory anyway, if you're really into getting blu-ray this early.

Big deal.

I already own a PS3 (strictly for Blu-ray, mind you). My HD DVD addon will still work for life as it works on PC's. The next Xbox will probably allow it to connect, too. So I'll still use my HD DVD collection for a long time.

I'll still buy HD DVD exclusives for now, too. American Gangster is one of them.

I doubt Universal will start cranking out Blu-ray releases for quite awhile. I'd even bet 2009 would be the earliest.
