Would it be possible for a company to make a media player for XBox Live to allow you to play various file formats that Microsoft doesn't yet support?

They could sell it and pay the rights for the codecs is used.

Possible absolutely..........probable no.

My reasoning is Microsoft would have done it themselves if it were so easy and I do not think they would let a third party offer a solution through live in effect pissing on their shoes.

I'm sure MS will no doubt work to get more codecs supported but its a legal headache for them, either that or they want to force people to use their own formats.

I bet there are at least 50,000 people that would be willing to pay $10 for a program to play all the various HD formats.

I suppose licensing is another matter.
