360 Doesn't See 500gb External

downed the new dash update hoping to get divx playback
my 360 doesn't see my maxtor 500GB usb 2.0 external hdd...
at first i tried just sharing it via pc but no avail as i forget exactly how to share crap via vista/xbox360... not just the right click and share crap as that not working.

weird, it works via pc sharing now and i didn't change a thing... guess it could've had to index or something...
anyways, now i just wanna be able to make external hdd work when connected directly to 360

anyways, i'm an idiot cuz i forgot that media player is how to config media sharing for vista... love the divx playback, works amazing smile.gif now to just get that darn drive working as plug and play on 360  huh.gif

Format the drive either in FAT32 (4gb file size limit) or HFS+ (use MacDrive 7)

NTFS is not compatible with the 360

thanks for the fast reply though. i was super stumped
what are downsides to fat32 though? i still use the drive on pc a lot. the filesize limit isn't really a big deal to me

well, rather than using a mac file sytem, i formatted it to fat32 now taking forever copying all my files back to the drive sad.gif grr.gif

NTFS is not compatible with the 360

Hfs+ is the better choice because you can play files bigger than 4gb.

what are you talking about man? I  am connected right now through my xbox to my sata ntfs harddrive and watching an avi file.

So your claim of the 360 not being compatible with ntfs is complete bull.

what I would like to know though, why it isn''t seing my ide drive.

I have several NTFS formatted IDE drives in usb 2.0 enclosures and the 360 can't see any ofthem.

I reformatted 2 of them to FAT 32 and had another one that was already FAT32 and it has no problem seeing any of them.

since launch the 360 has been unable to read NTFS... it was written plainly in usermanual and everything.

unless they changed something in an update at some point the system has never been able to read NTFS directly through USB.

You are mistaking cause I am connecting to a sata hdd that has the ntfs file system on it as we speak via the media blade of my xbox 360.

It could also mean that you are trying to say it can not connect to a usb hdd with ntfs.

So either way be clear with what you write or be sure.

You must be using HDHacker or something, the 360 only accepts FAT32 or HFS+. Provide pictures of what your doing because you don't make any sense.

Duh anyone can connect with a sata HDD if they are using media sharing, which is exactly what you are doing by the sounds of it. This guy was talking about connecting a HDD formatted ntfs directly to the console via USB, he said that way up the page. I think it was said clear enough.

this is kind of off topic, but is there anyway to add files to your usb hdd that's connected to your 360 by using your pc and the network?  I hate connecting and disconnecting it everytime I want to update stuff.  I would just stream from the pc > 360, but I have wireless and use wmv-hd sometimes...

Nope. Probably the best thing I've thought of to do that is to connect the USB threw a USB hub or some sort of splitter and have one USB cable go to your PC and the other to the 360 that way you could access the HDD from a PC to transfer stuff to it and then also access it with the 360 to watch it. Not a good solution though as you would have to run a long USB cable for most setups unless you keep your PC near your 360. I have not done this yet, but it's the only way I've come up with for doing that.

But as far as using the network to access an external HDD connected to the 360, it's impossible.... for now.
