Microsoft debuts Extenders for Windows Media Center, adds DivX and XviD

Today Microsoft is announcing a reinvigorated Media Center Extender effort called... wait for it... Extenders for Windows Media Center. Ok, the name totally sucks, but the important part is Microsoft upgraded its wayward Extender system with a new version that takes full advantage of Vista (including live HDTV streaming), supports 802.11n, and adds something that really blew our mind: codecs we actually care about, namely XviD and DivX. Niveus, Linksys, and D-Link will all be launching new devices based on this software platform, so watch out for those -- as well as DVD players, TVs, and all manner of other home theater devices Microsoft is apparently trying to get this new system built right into. Unfortunately this new Extender rev isn't being announced for the Xbox 360 (yet), so we'll all have to wait a while longer before playing XviD and DivX movies on that thing -- without transcoding, anyway.

I just read this on engadget (erm.. durr.. that's where the story is from). Interesting article. To bad they haven't added DivX and/or XviD support to the Xbox 360. That would be really useful. Especially because I'd like to watch an XviD encoded movie on my TV.. but don't wanna burn it. I know I can transcode it somehow, but it doesn't really work in Vista. Media Center doesn't even recognize the movie file. I have all codecs installed.. so Idk. I'll try it later in XP though.

Somehow, I feel a catch coming with it. We'll see.

However, I guess now it's not impossible they'll update the Xbox360 from a 'Media Center Extender' to an 'Extender for Windows Media Center' ;-)

The only catch I see is having to pay, which, if the price was reasonable I would have no problem doing if its for the 360 (as many others have said they would as well)

*crosses fingers for this to be in the fall update*

Looks like that leaked fall update list with "DivX/Xvid support" was real after all.  biggrin.gif

If this does in fact happen I'll be impressed. It's almost as if MS is compromising, "we'll give you your media center and hopefully that'll discourage many of you from totally hacking our system."

yep.. I 100% totally agree, why MS will now support a hacked avi codec, that is mainly used for downloaded tv/movies seems very odd.. DRM?

That would suck so much, especially if its a good part in the movie.

I reckon this update will come in our bi-yearly update. Woot!

Be nice to have H264 though as most of my video archives are in that format...

I was under the impression that h.264 codec was added back in the Spring.. or am I losing my mind...

Well, also DiVX is a fully Licensed and Copyrighted program, that had originated from a hacked program, but I guess times changed... and XViD is open project form of DiVX... either way, everyone tries to port them over to everything and anything with a screen and memory device built together...

but I don't see why they would allow playback of such files... it's the only reason why iTunes Video library is still afloat... otherwise, i'd think you'd see a huge hit in sales.

I still prefer WMV... it's pretty decent and can playback HD content on the 360 in relatively the same quality and filesize as XViD... so I could careless... but hey, the more options the better... but this is a spec and hype i'll believe it when I see it...

I think much much much People will buy the Console when they hear it can playback Xvid and DivX.
But also in my opinion x264 and mkv are also some codecs that should by played from the xbox360.
i think they will sell 20% more Konsoles...

cheers...
