Blockbuster's Blu-ray Endorsement Having Major Impact on HD DVD Sales

From gizmodo.com:

Blockbuster's decision to support Blu-ray in all of its 1,450 stores is having a bigger impact than it seems. A tipster at an unnamed retailer tells us they've had more HD DVD player orders canceled over the last few days than they've seen over the entire life cycle. The kicker? All of them were canceled because of the Blockbuster announcement.

Not only that, new sales of HD DVD players are nonexistent, with Blu-ray being the only things moving now.

Now I dont care whether Blu-Ray or HD-DVD wins, I just want one to come out on top... I need to start my HD collection, and am sick of buying DVDs...

If this means that one format is going to end up on top then i'm happy... I kinda liked HD-DVD tho.. oh well biggrin.gif

So Blockbuster's decision goes public yesterday and now it's having a "Major Impact" on HD-DVD player sales?  I just don't see how in such little time this is happening.  Didn't Blockbuster say they are still supporting HD-DVD just online only.  Netflix and other services like it still support HD-DVD so take that for what it's worth..

I could care less really.  I don't plan on buying into either format for at least another year or 2.

I think it's a shame that the Xbox 360 is being grouped into HD-DVD's success or failure.  They simply made an add-on for the console and did HD-DVD because at the time these formats launched it was superior.  They can just as easily make a Blu-ray player add-on and support that format.  I think I would of been more inclined to link the 360 to HD-DVD if the player was internal.

But I guess fanboys will take whatever ammo they can get when bashing/defending their system.

Sony Pictures (along with Columbia and MGM), Disney, 20th Century Fox, anb Lions Gate have exclusively backed Blu-ray.

Universal is the only studio that has exclusively backed HD-DVD.

Content is King.

HDDVD had no chance to win this war.

In addition to Universal you left out New line cinema, Warner Brothers, Paramount and HBO.  But don't let me get in the way of your agenda...

This whole Blu-Ray / HD-DVD issue has become a big joke. Blockbuster now supporting Blu-Ray, Maybe tomorrow Sony will come out saying they will support HD-DVD.  laugh.gif  dry.gif

I can't wait for a dual format player to come out, hopefully after this will turn out like + and - dvd's where it ultimately doesn't matter.
