360 To Support X264
« on: April 09, 2007, 03:08:00 AM »

Taken from http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2007/0408-im.htm
  1. H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
  2. Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
So will they need to be in the mp4 container, or can I use mkv with aac audio?  Also why no 5.1 support?  I don't mind transcoding ac3 to aac but I want to keep the 5.1.  Either way it seems microsoft is taking a step in the right direction.  I can hardly wait for may 7th now.

AAARRRGGG!!!! 15MBPS?!?!? well, at least yes, they are in the right direction now. my money was on no additional codec support, so thankfully i lost a buck. ;->

WTF!?! Why 2 channels support only, though?

I'm sick and tired of these shitty incremental upgrades.

The updates are a step in the right direction. Looks like I will be doing some audio reecoding! Just save the original DTS and DD+ tracks. They arent that big and the support will be there soon enough.

h.264 /= x264

If the 360 were actually going to support x264, I would be very happy. But this announcement doesn't go that far.  M$ will probably invent some new container for h.264, so we'll still have to reencode all of our x264 files to play on the 360.

x264 and h264 are the same damn thing, container means nothing about the video.

People need to understand that H.264 is still under heavy development even x264 doesn't support the full set of features that h264 has to offer. It probably comes closest to it though, but to say xbox 360 will support x264 you could definitely say no since Xbox 360 will only offer limited h264 support. And most people that use x264 will make benefit of options that the xbox 360 will likely not support. However you could make Xbox 360 compatible encodes with x264!

And actually you could convert DTS to AAC 5.1 in a mpeg4 container but the specs say this isn't supported. Don't even try guessing that DTS will ever be supported by Xbox 360, it's licensed and even on PC there's only a few tools that actually do support DTS decoding.

As for MKV, MKV has nothing to do with mpeg4 at all, it's just some open source container which has minimal support outside the world of PC users. So don't count on any implentation of that.

Ideally an Mpeg4 encode would have MP4 container + AAC sound + AVC(h264) video

Provided that you would use LC AAC sound and main profile AVC video encoding options this file should play back on your Xbox 360!

actually never mind my previous post. It seems MS has updated their site silently. Now it no longer says anything about which H264 level is supported, just that they support high profile. So there still may be hope (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

If this really works as advertised, getting current x264 encodes to work might be as easy as a simple video remux and audio transcode.
