VC-1/H.264 Streaming Coming to the Xbox 360

From happybeggar.com:

Someone in the Microsoft Vista Media Center team has reported that the XBOX 360 will be able to playback VC-1 video soon:
"Yep - we're enabling VC-1 streaming to Xbox 360; it's turned off in the build you have now, but it will be turned on for release."

Could the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec be also already included in the console?  VC-1 and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC are both mandatory for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray... so if the HD-DVD drive is available at the end of November then both video format should be playable on the Xbox 360 at that time.

Let hope that Microsoft will allow streaming of both format to the 360 extender when Vista is released.

This was compulsory for the HD-DVD add on but it's nice to see it added to the supported formats with streaming from media centre.

The key question is how it will be implemented.

MS have crippled their mpeg1/2 streaming by not supporting it fully like the WMV8 and WMV9 streaming. e.g. You dont get the ability to cue with mpeg streaming

Things like, will they add support for AVI containers with H.264 encoded video or will it be for WMV containers only.

I don't know about you but I've RARELY seen h264/x264 used in the AVI container; its more often used with the matroska (.mkv) container, that's the one I'd be worried about not being supported, AVI at least is built into windows, but for mkv files you need a separate splitter (Haali's Media Splitter).

if I could stream H264 to the Xbox 360 (that, and if it was quieter), my HTPC would be useless right now

however, the htpc can barely be heard 4 ft away at idle... the xbox can be heard in the next room
=== but the HTPC only has a GMA900 (Pentium M 760 2.0 GHz)

How is your xbox heard in the next room? You must live in a really small place or your xbox is broken.

Oh you didnt know thats where all this "customer has choice" bs was going?

Wait until all of your games are filled with commercials (cutscenes they will be called) and logos and advers everywhere.  Then you will have the "choice" to have them cut out for 39.95$.

I mean you already see this jack ass Burger king bastard ridin all around on a bumper car and all the bs in fight night and PDZ to name a few.  Give it time.

Only the games that can be hacked will be worth a damn.  Because those will be the only ones that you will be able to remove all the garbage.

And how about divx streaming. (No, transcoder360 doesnt do it for me) I mean the wii has a linux based os, so it will probably be open to almost everything. MS should respond by actualy making the 360 playback all sorts of formats smile.gif

I know, considering how popular xbmc is, I'm suprised they didnt let it play more formats, kinda annoying.

AFAIK its called laws, m$ would have to pay royalties for us to playback divx and "other" formats.....so who wants to whine about pricing and adverts but then expect more
