Stream Video from XP to Xbox 360 with WMP 11? (not yet, maybe this fall)

Windows Media Player 11 beta2 is now available and this is what the Microsoft PR writes as one of the new features:
"If you have a home network (wired or wireless), you can use Windows Media Player 11 to stream the contents of your library to networked devices. For example, if you have an Xbox 360 or other digital media receiver (DMR), you can use Windows Media Player to stream music, pictures, and videos from your computer to that device."

Sounds great ... will Microsoft finally allow us to stream movies from a normal Windows XP machine and stop forcing Media Center PC on us? Well ... right now it doesn't work.
WMP 11 beta2 does have Windows Media Connect built in, which allows to stream pictures and music to your Xbox 360, but video is still a no-go.

Some sites suggest there will be an Xbox 360 dashboard update (the big fall 06 update maybe?) to allow streaming videos from WMP 11, but right now there's no official confirmation from Microsoft about this.

Hopefully they will open it to other formats besides MS media formats. Im not holding my breath though.

na i dont think video streaming is possible thru wmp11.All that wmp11beta 2 adds is media connect built in the player so no need to have media connect running too.

That will never happen. The 360 does not have the codecs to play divx or any other format not supported.

That will never happen. M$ will not support anthing that supports piracy.

I do realize, of course, that Microsoft has it's own interests (i.e. codec's) involved so supporting non-MS made codec's (Divx, Realplayer, etc) is probably not in the cards.

I know there are divx players on the market. Hell my Creative Zen mp3 player plays divx and xvids and can hook up to my tv for play back. M$ will not get divx since they will have to pay royalties etc so why would they.

Divx / Xvid does not equal piracy. Divx and Xvid are perfectly legitimate codecs for compressing your own media files. Coincidently, since they have such a good compression algorithm, it has become the "scene standard" for pirated releases.

MSFT chooses to support MP3, even though the format is the "scene standard" for pirated releases.

If MSFT is not supporting Divx/Xvid because they feel that it only represents support for piracy, then they should stop supporting MP3 as well.

On another note, it has been confirmed here http://www.neowin.ne...howtopic=491664 that there a several major bugs present in WMP 11 Beta 2 when installing on MCE that were not present in Beta 1.
