Hang When Trying To Play Music From A Usb Flash Drive

I copied some MP3 files to a 1GB USB Flash drive to use as custom soundtracks. The XBox 360 dash shows the
folders and files but if I select one to play, the 360 hangs. The light on the flash drive is going bananas at this point, whether reading or writing I can't tell. Nothing on the controller responds and I have to go for the power button.

Is this supposed to work? Am I doing something wrong?

This is a Core by the way, no HD.
