The Way To Play Hdtv Files / Divx/xvid Movies

i wanna play downloaded hdtv videos and divx/xvid videos, i've seen just about a hundred topics discussing different ways to play these, what's the deal with them? is there some sort of program i can use, i searched and saw that orb program, can i use this to play them instead of installing wmce?
