Toshiba to Delay HD DVD Player Launch-- Posted by XanTium on December 13 22:26 EST
From forbes.com:

Quote

Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp. said Tuesday copy protection issues would delay the Japan launch of the first players supporting its HD DVD format, the latest development in the high-stakes battle for the next generation of video discs.
Players will not hit the Japanese market until details of a copy protection system for the players are worked out, Toshiba said in a statement, reversing its earlier intention to roll out the first players in Japan by the end of the year. Toshiba did not give a specific release date.

The delay brings the launch of the HD DVD, jointly developed by Toshiba and NEC Corp., closer to the expected debut of its main competitor, the Blu-ray disc, which is backed by Sony Corp.

So I was talking to a guy I work with that has a friend (Ya know how it goes...) who is a supplier to MS, and he says that there is going to be another version/rev of the Xbox 360 realeased early next year (March or May, I can't remember which)...  So I'm wondering if it is going to be one with an HD DVD drive.  He's going to follow up with his friend and try to get some more info.

No way! You know how many people that would piss off? Every single person that bought a system already would be mad as hell.

Its old news about the new revision, it will not happen.

And if it did - theyd have to offer free upgrades to everyone who already got a 360.

I can say after reading Stuff mag, a gadget mag in the UK. They said there will be a HD DVD version of the 360, which will allow you to play HD DVD's.

And they got this info from MS, just had to say that. To tell people what side of this story I read mates.

Let em have it, we dont need no stinking copy protected garbage. I got my 1080I DVD player, and my 1080I XBOX 1.

HD-DVD is a new movie format - This post doesnt have much relavence to the Xbox360 as they are refering to Toshiba HD-DVD standalone movie players.

While Intel and MS back HD-DVD, there is no statement anywhere that says the Xbox 360 will get a HD-DVD at some point in the future. Even if they did, it would only be for the benefits of movies - MS is pretty much stuck with DVD9 as a games format for the life of the 360.

They would not HAVE to offer upgrades to anyone, and I bet they won't even offer it at a price...  Maybe they could sell an external USB HD-DVD drive for the people that bought the first gen, and then it could also be used on the PC (Like the controllers..).

There wont be any upgrading of current 360s to include an HD-DVD drive.

part of the security spec for HD-DVD is that it can output in HD unless through an HDCP HDMI or DVI connection... neither of which are supported currently by the Xbox 360...

So it's more than just the disc drive that would have to change.

IF (and IMO it's a big IF) MS does release a HD-DVD version of the Xbox 360 it will be a completely different console and will not play any different games, more of a Xbox 360 + HD-DVD movie player combo

Similar to the PSX DVR Sony released in Japan that bombed horribly.

Man, they need to get this thing out.  Toshiba needs that couple month edge.  Blu-Ray looks mighty good to everyone but consumers.  Managed copy is a MUST.  If I own a DVD, I want to be able to rip it.  Look at how popular portable media centers are becoming.  Hell, the new iPod even plays videos.  So, how are you going to get all of the movies you OWN on them.
