I purchased a replacement Hitachi drive from Etech4sale and got a disc along with it.

It was still in the drive and it was marked "1529 Recovery.ISO"

The files on the disc (its a burned disc) are

RECMEDIA (folder)
default.xex 1,386k
drivers.xex 306 k
recctrl.bin 26k
recdata.bin 88,740
recini.ini 1k (contains: "[xbdm] drivemap internal=1" )
xam.xex 1,604
xbdm.ini  1k
xbdb.xex 195k
xboxroma.bin 184k
xboxromsb.bin 204k
xboxromw1d.bin 204k
xeboot 1k
xnet.xex 927kb

Theres also some bitmapped image files included , one says "UPDATING, RECOVERING WITH DEFAULT SETTINGS, DO NOT POWER OFF or REBOOT"

What the heck is it?

If I had to guess I would say it is some sort of internal testing disc used at the MS repair center.  I know when I got a new drive from Etech4sale it had a pressed disc that was labeled "XStress Retail Media".  So leaving this sort of thing in the drive must be common for ms employees.   Have you tried it in your 360 to see what happens?

What you have is a Xbox 360 recovery disc used for updating a 360 development kit or a 360 debug kit to a higher kerenl. That recovery disc is very old, also its of no use in a retail kit.

Shame....
i recon the OP was about to knock one out due to the excitement at having found some some 360 holy grail.

No point keeping this dvd that came in my refurbed box
the writings difficult to read but it says something like
"360 private XBE encrpytion key"

ah well in the bin with the rest of the costers....

(Joke joke joke i dont even have a refurb 360 let alone any mystical dvd's)

When I got back my repaired xbox almost a year ago, the drive also contained a disc which said "Public Enemy" or something. I thought it was some movie disc, so I threw it away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Cool. I figured it could have been a Dev kit update or something.

I was kinda hoping it was a "pairing" disc or some other coolness.

I cant wait to get home brew running on the 360. XBMP FTW.

Heh, it's certainly interesting to see what makes it back to the customer.

Y'see? If I were a Microsoft employee with not a shred of self-preservation, I'd have such a good time working at the Repair Center.

Repair the drives, ship 'em back with blank DVD-Rs with sharpie on 'em.

"Xbox Live Dashboard Alpha Testing"
"RRoDEngineeredObselescence.exe"
"Area 51: Fire Escape Route Map"
"Bill & Melinda: Honeymoon '94"
"Grassy Knoll After-Action Report"
