I'm also getting the xmas lights when I turn an empty xbox on without the modchip on (when a game is not in the disk drive when the modchip is off).  I'm guessing the xmas lights have to do with a disk drive problem because the drive makes an audible noise exactly when the error message comes up.

Any answers to the original post, or possibly an explanation concerning my additional xbox conditions, would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
