Xbl With Switch...how?

ok I hooked up the DLINK DSS-5+ switch and it gives me the ip address so I can connect with FLASHFXP and network just fine but when I try to go on live it can't detect it.  Says DNS not resolved.  How do I get around using a switch to get on live instead of a router.  A buddy said I may need to activate a new IP through my ISP??  Any ideas on getting internet shared to my xbox through the switch?
