Avi Playback Problem.
« on: February 25, 2008, 03:52:00 AM »

I have some problems (Mentally, and with the Xbox.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ) I downloaded an AVI file of a movie I own (It's faster for me to download than it is to convert). I played the AVI to make sure it was working. Played fine using DIVX Player, Nero Showtime, and Windows Media Player. I created an xISO with Qwix, and burnt the xISO to Maxell CD-R media. I then copied it to the Xbox using UnleashX. I went into XBMC and tried playing the file. I heard the audio, but saw no video, so I fast forwarded the movie, and I saw a single frame, but still heard the audio. I figured it was just corrupt from copying it. So, I deleted the file. I then copied it with XBMC, tried playing the file, again, same problem. I then hooked up my computer to the box and copied the movie via FTP. I still have the same problem. What would cause it to do this? Just a bad avi file, even though it plays fine on my computer, or a corrupt codec on the xbox? All my other movies play fine though... I'm in the process of converting it to MPEG, but I like the size and quality that this file is. I am downloading the newest T3CH release right now. I currently have a release from late January 2008.

Sounds like the video codec/bitrate is a bit much for the old X-Box processor.

An easy way to test this is to just pause the movie at any point. Give it a few seconds and see if the correct frame turns up on the screen. If you're getting this sort of lag, you can try using the DVDPlayer instead (white button => Play Using), as it tends to run a little faster... Though if that doesn't work as it should, you need to re-encode.

Thanks! That worked great (DVDPlayer). So since it'll play in DVDPlayer and not MPlayer, should I recode so I don't have to click the white button all the time just to play it, or can I set it to be played with DVDPlayer by default in any way?

I don't know of any way to change the defaults, and unless you're using some obscure container (ei. Something other then avi/mkv/mpg) you really wouldn't want to (as MPlayer is generally the better of the two).

You can re-encode if you like, but you'll lose quality. But by all means check out the result... If it's good enough you might not care about the difference.

Frankly I would just make do with the Play Using option. Or are you really planning on watching this movie every day?
