yeah, you literally posted NO specific information about your network, equipment, XBMC version, etc. how the hell would we know? hehe
if you have a LAN with a router as the centerpiece, usually it's best to just set it to DHCP. DHCP is Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, and basically it lets networking devices talk to each other and sort out how to work together in the background, without user intervention. this generally means stuff is as dumb as "plug it in and it works"...
