« on: June 12, 2004, 06:43:00 PM »

OK i am just wondering if there is like something that I could do or download that would allow my PC to read xbox cd's, if you can get a xbox to read any CD why not get a computer to read an xbox one?  Do i need just a cd dirve or a pc dvd drive as well?  <

very true...not possible

if u put a 616t in a pc, it works just like a regular pc DVD drive. the 616t can be used in the xbox (with special modifications) to be able to read xbox disks but the opposite can't be done

Yep.. to expand on this a little, it's because physically, The Samsung 605b used in the Xbox and the Samsung 616t used in computers are the almost same drive (different power connectors, thats about it). However, it's the firmware that determines whether they can read Xbox discs.

With its regular firmware, the 616t can be used in the Xbox, but it won't read originals. Flash it with the 605b firmware, and it reads almost everything! However, once it's flashed with Xbox firmware, it won't be able to communicate with a PC, if you were to plug it back into one.   <

When i got my first xbox, one of the first things i did was hool up the dvd drive in my computer. (at that time i didnt have a modded xbox, or the dvd playback kit, and i wanted to watch dvd's, so i figured i would use my computer)

My bios recognized it, but everything i tried in windows failed. I gave up shortly there after.   <

Well you could build a BIOS for your computer and then it should work, but I dont tihnk you would want a $1,000 xbox, or however much your computer is worth. :jester:   <

I'm sure its more of a windows driver problem than a bios problem.   <

I'm sure its more of a windows driver problem than a bios problem.

the xbox uses a 2048-bit encryption on the discs, in order to read the discs, yo uneed to know hwo to decrypt them, the xbox bios holds half the "key" the dvd-rom firmware holds the other half, so you need both the xbox motherboard and xbox dvd-rom to read xbox originals, this why why a PC drive in an xbox cant read originals either (unless its the 616 with the 605 firmware)  <
