It's the BIOS that supports replacement HDDs not really the chip.
If you can flash that Matrix with an Executer 49xx BIOS you should be OK.

its not like xbox can only use xbox harddrives. You can put any kind of harddrive like Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, etc.. harddrives in there, up to 2 Terabytes with the BIOS xecuter 4979:)

Don't worry about what Slayer's says.  It's the BIOS that matters.  Flash your modchip with Executer 4979_06 FIRST and then install your new Hard Drive with Slayer's.  Your F: Drive will use up all the available space past the required C and E partitions.

Go HERE and you can see if the hard drive is lockable or not, great guide and it contains about every hdd imaginable.

You can click on the old link on that post to sift through about 32 pages of personal experiences with "X" brand hard drive and if it was lockable to them or not.

Hope this helps. biggrin.gif

OPPS, I had forgot to include the link.

4979_67 is OK too.   You will have a F: and G: partition now.  F: up to 137, and G: taking up the remainder of the space.  Not a big deal.

Locking is a feature that's built into some hard drives.  This is to prevent unauthorized access to the drive by removing it and installing in another computer.

The lock is a long hexadecimal key that's based on the serial number of the xbox, and other variables.  So if you remove the stock drive from an Xbox, you can't read it in a PC.  In fact you can't even access the drive.

You can Unlock a stock drive and use it in a PC with ConfigMagic.  You must lock in order to be able to boot with a Stock BIOS for Live play.

EDITED because I should have remembered the basics.  Too goddamned late,  I'm goin to bed.

Also, to play on XBox Live, your hard drive MUST be locked, or your xbox will be banned. M$ can detect if a HDD is unlocked.

Thats a bit misleading...
MS detects if the BIOS is not a retail one; so you have to use a retail bios to be on LIVE, we all know this.  That bios is what requires the hard drive to be locked, not live.
