If your TV supports PAL, you could switch to that. It runs at a slightly higher resolution then NTSC and the fonts look pristine in comparison.

Higher resolution<> smaller letters. My suggestion would be to pick up a font with good readability and a theme check them here http://blackmarket.ictcsc.net or just grab XBMC from AID tracker.

It doesn't make them larger on screen, granted. But it does add clarity.

look in the skin folder for font.xml and change the font size...
