Beyond Frustrated With Xbmc, Internet, And Smb
« on: December 05, 2005, 02:45:00 PM »

Okay.

First, let me say that I have been reading and reading and reading and searching for info about my problems.

But I can't figure out a damn thing.

Let me explain my setup first:

DSL goes into a 4-port router

Router IP: 192.168.1.1

My computer IP: 192.168.1.10
Xbox IP: 192.168.1.32

I have tried intenet settings on XBMC using Static IP (which is what my router is set to do.. assign only my xbox and system with their own static IP's), DHCP, and manual in both the dash and in XBMC.

Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

Due to the fact that video playback was freezing, I updated XBMC to the latest version (11-27-05 tech).  Video works FANTASTIC now btw...

HOWEVER- I cannot for the life of me get internet to work- UNLESS I wipe the 0face008 folders and don't change a single thing in my settings or restart XBMC.  When I upgraded, I cleared the TDATA and UDATA 0face008 folders, and deleted the old XBMC folder so I could start fresh with the new build.

Now I get absolutely NO internet, weather, shoutcast, etc. from my xbox.  Not to mention that SMB is a mother farking pain in the ass to setup- even though I have an xbox account with access to an entire drive and all of it's info in the xboxmediacenter.xml file.

I'm so freaking pissed off at the stupid thing I could throw it off my balcony right now.  One moment it works, but if I change ANYTHING- even just restart XBMC- I no longer have internet on my xbox.

Soooo.. does anyone have this problem?  Cause I'm mad.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

Your dns is not 192.168.1.1!
Go to your router and check the status and it should give you list of settings. Your actual ip assigned from your isp to the router and if you look down a little ways your will see dns. there should be 2 or 3 of these. use the top two in the order they are in and it should fix the problem.

most routers can do DNS (and DHCP etc)
If i were you I would:
-use a virgin xboxmediacenter.xml
-check if the router can do DHCP. if it can, set xbmc to dhcp
-restart.

if it still doesnt work, its 99% not a xbmc problem.
check if you can access xbox from the PC

...and SMB is easy. no need for user:pass@IP/lala
you dont even have to edit your xml any longer.

-just enter your details @settings->network->SMB (user/pass/IP is not important)
-go to the section where xou want to have a smb bookmark->press white button->ceate bookmark like
MY NETWORK, path: smb://

Now when you hit MY NETWORK, XBMC scans the LAN for PCs, displayes their names and shares.
Be a bit patient, the browselist in smb networks is dynamically generated and maintained, so xbmc will need a few seconds to grab it.

XBMC:UBERgreat...

Hope this helps,
da uber

i can tell your DNS is WRONGGGGGG
go to your pc, from the command window, type in "ipconfig /all" without quotes to see what's your DNS that should solve the problem

wow, ice-age-routers lol
I got also an old router but  typing

CODE

>nslookup www.ebay.com

in terminal (sorry got only a mac but windoze got the command too)
I get
CODE

Server:         192.168.1.1
Address:        192.168.1.1#53

(192.168.1.1 @port 53 -typical for nameservers- answers my dns requests)
and then the info:
CODE

www.ebay.com    canonical name = hp-core.ebay.com.
Name:   hp-core.ebay.com
Address: 66.135.192.123
Name:   hp-core.ebay.com
Address: 66.135.192.124
Name:   hp-core.ebay.com
Address: 66.135.208.89
Name:   hp-core.ebay.com
Address: 66.135.208.90

more infos about my setup:
CODE

>ifconfig  en0
en0: flags=8863 mtu 1500
        inet 192.168.1.102 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
        ether 00:0a:95:69:dd:7c
        media: autoselect (100baseTX ) status: active
>route get ebay.de
   route to: 66.135.192.71
destination: default
       mask: default
    gateway: 192.168.1.1
  interface: en0

To make it short: 192.168.1.1 is my gateway/router AND my DNSServer. (and DHCP)

This is a help thread, so if you think the DNS is wrong,
try this ip for dns:

194.25.2.132

I agree Uber.  My netgear does the same thing (DNS, etc.).  But, I did have one strange name resolution problem that I could only solve by using an external dns server on the Xbox.

I can only draw up my setup:

WAN->MODEM->ROUTER (D-LINK 624 4port and 108mbit wlan)

ROUTER->PC

ROUTER->XBOX1 (Livingroom)

ROUTER->XBOX2 (Bedroom)

ROUTER->XBOX3 (Livingroom test machine)

ROUTER WLAN->LAPTOP

ROUTER IP: 192.168.0.1
NETMASK: 255.255.255.0

PC IP (DHCP): 192.168.0.100
NETMASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

XBOX1 (STATIC): 192.168.0.101
NETMASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

XBOX2 (STATIC): 192.168.0.102
NETMASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

XBOX3 (STATIC): 192.168.0.103
NETMASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

LAPTOP (DHCP): 192.168.0.104
NETMASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1

Router setup to giveout static dhcp adresses based on pc/xbox MAC adress (XBOX1 always gets 192.168.0.101 etc etc)

In network settings of XBMC on all the XBoxe´s:

IP (Set to static as stated above): 192.168.0.10*
NETMASK : 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY: 192.168.0.1
NAMESERVER: 192.168.0.1

Dunno if this is of any help, but that´s the setup i am running, and have been for +1½ years.
