Just a guess (I don't know shyate about coding), but I think we're waiting for the on that says "(GPL)" next to it.

But are any of those developers current?  I would have thought they would start licensing the Doom 3 engine to developers once it started to get stable.

And of course there's nothing to stop them releasing it GPL and still charging people money anyway.  Just look at Mysql. ;-)
