http://www.liberatedgames.com/game.php?game_id=42
Go to this link to get all of the needed files. I played this game a little bit on the 3do and I remembered it being a very in-depth space exploration/shooter type game. I am pretty sure if this got ported over, there would be a lot of appreciation for it. The game goes by another name called "The Ur-Quan Masters"...
Anyone willing to take on this project speak up and let us know!
-
I will pay serious money to anyone who ports this to the XBox.
-
I will buy who ever ports this (if it is infact full source and possible) a hooker!!!
NO WAIT!!! Two hookers!
-
Yeah, it's full source, and similar threads have been started several times already over the last few years, but no one seems interested. I too would love to see this on Xbox natively.
-
Yep I want it too, I tried to port it about a year ago and failed, my coding 'skillz' are sorely lacking.
'The ur quan masters' is actually a port of the 3do version, the souce code for the PC ver got lost.
Ive had Star control 2 running on that dos emu, feel too incomplete to play though.
Hmm I KNOW it wouldnt be hard to port, just too hard for me.
Can I just add to any potential portsmiths out there that this game could be the greatest two player battle ever, you need this on the xbox, you need to port it.

Why not install xDSL and play the Linux-version?

*makes mental note to try that later*
-
Can't edit my posts? Oh, well...

Now that I think of it, a native port WOULD be cool. The interface of the game is very simple and could be used with an Xbox Controller without any problems. The game uses SDL for in/output (doesn't need OpenGL, but supports it...) and supports a variety of display resolutions with filtering. However, I would wait until V1.0 is released. The developers are still making progress with the game, after all.
-
It would be very cool indeed. I had the linux version running on my xbox for a while, but that means that Star Control 2 runs with a 2GB footprint or so. And, I had to use an on-screen keyboard to launch it, and install dependencies, and etc etc etc...

Use xDSL with a modified startup script. Your 'footprint' will be something like 50MB + space for The Ur-Quan Masters.

You are a wizard.
(Still, it would be awesome if there was a native port. I think it'd quickly become one of the most popular ported games.)
-
No-one, it seems? There is not a single developer interested in porting this?
-

All developers are cowards! *holds up flame-shield while all developers shoot with flamethrowers on him* JUST KIDDING!!! *sighs*
I think that there simply aren't any interested developers. Off course, you must actually LIKE a game to even have the idea to port it. Maybe they just didn't play it. Or maybe it is actually hard to port.
Note for developers: there is an SDL-version of the game (for Linux). Does this make it easier to port?
-
I'll look at it. In probably a couple weeks. I have too much stuff on my plate right now, once a couple things get released I can look at it.
-
thx d0wnlab. ;]

The joker and myself have spent a few days working on a port. Its not quite working properly outside of Super Melee mode but we are working on it.

Here are a few screenshots for those that are interested:

Hey, this is great news!
In fact it is the best news i read on xbox-scene this year ^_^
I remember playing this game on my lowly 386SX-33 and having a complete blast!
-
YES.
I am one pleased man.
-
I love you all. So very much.
Let me know if there's any tedious work I can do to speed things along.
-
Pretty much the only things that are causing major problems are the bits of code to load fonts. Its hard to truly appreciate the game when you can't read the story or use any of the menus but the parts of the game that do work ok (i.e. super melee mode) are very cool running on the xbox.
If I don't get the existing font loader code working by the end of today I will have to consider rewriting it or something.
-
even got the story mode started : (IMG:http://www.crusaders.no/~joker/JJ_TJ/g.jpg)
as mentionned, mad problems with paths in the core engine.
-
I can't wait for this Port to be released! Keep up the Good Work!
-
(IMG:http://www.crusaders.no/~joker/JJ_TJ/g2.jpg)
as we're keeping up the good work, Carch helped us with the sound and voila - speech works perfectly :) And with speech we can now also see the ugly ones ;)
thx carch
*edit* now, if we can solve fonts, we prolly have a beta.

actually :) located the problem, they use the "." dir in directories to check if things is a folder or a file, and since xbox doesn't have those, it "never found" dirs.

afaik, just testing remains :)
-
ok, we have sendt it out to some testers for pre-release testing. In addition to tmauls test-panel, I'm putting some of the testers of avalaunch through it. Few more days and it should be ready to release, unless there's some huge bugs.
One thing that worries me a tad is that it's over 13.000 files ;) But since probably all of you are using avalaunch and qwix anyway, that's no issue hehe
-
I have been waiting for this for so long!!!
Perhaps to help with the issue of files, maybe using the .uqm (zip renamed) packs ?
Thanks again
-
Holy crap! I forgot to check this thread out since I started it, and now there is a working port of Star Control II (aka urquan masters) out!!! Man o man o man...can you send me a private message with an ftp address so I can try it? If not I guess I can wait until your stable official copy is out... So I assume everything is in here, music and all? Can't wait! Thanks!
-
Music, Speech and 3do intro and ending movies are all there. The controls are setup nicely for the xbox controller and with luck it should be runable from dvd or hdd. All in all the xbox is the perfect machine for some Star Control 2 fun. :)

So how is the testing going so far? Anyone point out any obvious bugs etc? Really anxious for this to go gold. I guess it will be "done when it's done". I have a feeling this release is going to be HUGE.
-
Ahh Comon Open Beta!
Oh BTW did Star Con 2 have multiplayer like Star Con 3 did? I can't remember its been so long.
This post has been edited by Nunim: Jun 4 2005, 02:59 PM

starcon2 storymode didn't have multiplayer, but it did have a "super melee" mode which let two players go at it on eachothers with 2 pads.. Actually never tested it with 2 yet.
Anyways, testers haven't had a single complain, now we're just working out how to distribute it since noone want to host somethin 200 mb big
We've got a good solution tho, but it takes a little while to tune so it really works =)
Expecting to have this out tomorrow, monday.

*Hint* - Bittorrent is great.
Seems like that would be the best way to do it, wrap up the package and send it to a few people so they can be the initial seeders. 5 start up seeders should do so everyone gets good initial speeds.
-
Are they legal files or built with xdk so it can only be distributed is a few places? If you made legal files with openSDK or otherwise I can host this for you for a bit.
-
Maybe the best is to distribute just the binairies and have everyone download the content fomr the regular mirrors on sourceforge.
-
I second that, The mirrors that already exist for the content on sourceforge are nice and fast, Im gonna grab them again, before the rush. :-)
-
Download starcontrol 2 builder
Does not contain any xbe's, so shouldn't be anything illegal in that file, however it has a bat-file that will download a few sets of files in order to get what it needs to make it playable.
What I suggest is that people use qwix to make it xiso and qwix it over to avalaunch. We haven't been able to make it accept the uqm zip's, so we have to unpack it and work on it in raw mode. It's a lot of files... Whole lot. Over 13000.
Qwix uses appx 2 minutes to transfer it to avalaunch with boostmode, and I'm guessing half an hour on regular FTP.
This is beta 1, I'm thinking beta 2 wil have zip-support, they were going to rewrite the fileaccess code that didn't work on ava in next core, 0.5.0. =)
use this thread for feedback as we'll look into it frequently. At this point, this thread is also the only place it's been released, might put the rar-file up to xbins as well tho.

can't get it to start. is that a valid .xbe file?
-
should be, none of the testers reported any problems. haven't had the chance of actually testing it myself, my laptop died on me last night when I was trying to put it over. Did it download and unpack the mad amount of files ?
-
I ran the program and it finished made all the files totals about 140MB and when I try to load the xbe it just hangs.
There seems to be this one file: uqm-0.4.0-content.uqm.1 , doesn't look unpacked its almost 12MB.
-
Thank you Joker and Tmaul and whoever else helped, Im d/l the files now and it all looks good. Thanks from the bottom of my person.
Have a piece of digital popcorn.
-
seems like it did, but when you run the default.xbe file it just hangs. it won't even load it seems like.
-
Yep same here, no dice.
Hangs.
-
hangs here too, looking into it right now - gonna have this working in less than an hour =)
-
Any updates? I'm hoping this is dead :(
I've found (some?) of the movies:
http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/3do/
It links to shitty file planet and you have to register to be able to download... does anyone have the movies? I'm wondering if these are all of them.... I think not. From memory the movie pak was a few hundred megs? I only have the intro, outro and credits. What else is there?
And I assume I just unzip them and rezip them into the correct filename - which is what? I know you need to then change it from .zip to .uqm
-
wow this looks really cool...
any hope of an update?
-
They've released 0.5 of the source. Would an updated binary be possible?
-
bat file from jokers site auto downloaded the movies from SF
the version i got also has the button mapping problem where u couldnt use main weapon only special attack.
ive been playing on and off, but ive been thru 2/3 of the game with no problems.
i may make a torrent of the good version i got after i check if jokers site is down. i wont say where i post it, but it shouldnt be hard to find if you really want it.
-
Good version? Do you mean you have a newer build that fixes some issues, like the not-being-able-to-fire?
If so, an xbe torrent would be all that's required.
-
just checked, and joker's site is still up
so just get it http://www.crusaders.no/~joker/sc2/ then run the .bat and it'll download and build everything for you
i think the fire problem was only inside the keys.cfg, and the one presently on joker's site works fine.
-
em so is this a full working thing?
-
I cant believe I never heard about this I love and own this game and a working 3do. I believe i have the star map and booklet from the game and a walkthrough.
dl right now cant wait to try it out thanks a millions guys this is fantasic

I ran into the bug that was brought up about remining a planet. I can remine any planet as many times as i want. Im trying not to remine but its hard when you start moving through the game.

i say i was trying not to the only planet i done it to so far is plutoX2, but i think i will get out my 3DO and play the OG 4 awhile.

Can someone please help me with a resolution problem? I have the game working on my xbox, but part of the top is offscreen! QUOTE(the joker @ Jun 6 2005, 08:07 PM)

yea, that seems to fix it. Fixed the rar-file for creating the game as well.
if you get a .1 it basically means it got disconnected from the download and tried over again without deleting the file that was already there. delete all uqm-files and restart =)
*edit* there's also a neat intro/ending pack somewhere that replaces the boring slideshow intro with a cool 3d intro instead. The bad thing is that I haven't seen it for download anywhere.
Full name : "uqm-0.4.0-3domovies.uqm" if you find it, lemme know. To "install it" just unzip it and put it into "content" dir =) ( yes, it's just a zip file ) hehe
*edit2*
also updated the xbe file to beta 1.1 =) some minor changes plus a neat icon.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) Anyone here get these Ur Quan movies? It seems big, but would be a nice idea to seed it in a well know bittorrents sites out there ... btw I'm a little lost in the game (don't know where to go) but the never ending remining bug makes the game very easy
-
DAMN! i cannot tell you how f'ing awesome it is to play SC2 again. esp with 3do music and speech with no (or hardly any) loading times. compared to waiting 5 seconds for the pkunks respawn on the 3do version, this is a godsend.
quick question tho - i know that the pc version let you cycle between different audiopacks (orig/3do, etc). is there any way of doing this in-game or is it just a matter of copying over the audio packs i want to use?
-
Has anyone finished the game on the Xbox? Because it crashes at the SaMatra.
Also if anyone knows if there is a way to make 2 players work (2 pads control the same ship (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ) please let me know.

I re-got this file after your post, and just tested it. It still doesn't work for me. A is special fire only, I still can't regular fire.... could you post your key.cfg please?
-
any new updates on enabling 2 player super melee mode? Also has anyone figured out how to keep the game from crashing once you undertake the final mission?
-
i just used a merge program to compare my keys with the one inside the rar on joker's site and there indentical.
so i really don't have a clue, maybe it's a setting inside the compiled xbe.
i didn't get to the ending yet, so i dunno if that crash happens for everyone
-
You mean that Super melee 2 players mode works with you?
-
i've only tried super melee against computer.
i was referring to people saying you can only use the special attack, the version i got i can use both regular and special attacks, in both single and multi player modes.
-
Ah, ok.
I got the download from the jockers site too, and never had a problem with the speial attacks.
I played multiplayer with the computer with no problem, but when I tried to play against one of my friends, to my sad surprise both pads control the same ship...
I never played the story mode on the Xbox (have already on 3DO) but a friend of mine did and as far as I know, the 3 main bugs are that you can remine any planet, game crashes at the final battle place (that would suck very bad for any who play the game to finish the story mode for the first time at the xbox) and the multiplayer one (The one I wished was fix).
If any one know a Keys.cfg that works for multiplayer please let me know (unless is forbidden)
-
Ok, I got the xbe again and it seems to work now for both fires. Perhaps mine was an older build, although they were exactly the same file size (didn't binary compare them though).
-
so i am one of the peeps that never got to play this on the 3do or PC...
I am wondering if anybody was thinking about picking this back up, would love to experince the endgame =)
thanks
-searchmonkey-
-
Thank you guys SO much for porting this. I played this game for a LONG time on the PC. Never got to the endgame of the single player, but got close. Maybe I'll get into it again. I think I still have the starmap that came in the box.
Anyway, just a quick question. Is there any way to exit Super Melee 2 mode? I just have to power cycle the xbox.
Also (just as a nitpick) it would be nice to restart the default dashboard when exiting the game. For me the screen just stays black.
-
I know it has been awhile but it would be really awesome and mean alot to me if someone fixed this up and finished it! Really speaking about the three-four bugs that still exist.
1. Ships aren't circling homeworlds (unimportant)
2. Freezes at the end (important)
3. Reminable planets (unimportant)
4. Super melee mode controller config (important)

Not to mention the source has had several big updates since the port.
Last time i spoke to joker in #avalaunch (6months+) he seemed totally uninterested in working on the project again.
When i inquired him about a possible source release, he left me with the impression of a very unoptimistic "maybe".
So pretty much the only chance we may see a completed port of this would be for someone else to pick up the newest sources and start over.
I think it is also listed as "maybe" in xport's list. But then again so are about 50 more games.
It's really an awesome classic game tho, and alot more suited to console+couch+TV play than the PC.

Getting a file from the horrible fileplanet that like the xbox auto update for this port, will let you dl whatever components you need for the pc version. I found this while doing a search for the movie files a few are having trouble finding (this includes me). If I actually get a hold of them will post more info here.
Does anyone have the newest key.config file? The updater tells me the link in the bat file is no longer valid (as well as the link that held the movies originally)
UPDATE: the UQM updater will update everything else but offers no movies option. Can anyone that has the movie files throw them up on a torrent site or rapidshare, etc? thanks

I do as well, thanks again!!

Did this port ever make it to the frontpage of xbox-scene or any other site? It's a shame because this has been out for a long time now and there are a lot of people left in the dark about this.
-
I am open to hosting A600's latest port, or the port by TMaul. I'll wait to see if I can get a copy of what A600 has done first, though.
I've got the video content and will include that as soon as I put one up for permanent hosting.
Also, for those of you looking for some working keys (special weapon, etc.) I made a custom keys.cfg file that works GREAT. You can download it here:

I had this problem too, but then I used the newer XBE that is available on the site and scraped the one that is generated with the .bat file.
You should give that a try.
-
do you have a date for the .xbe file? I have one that is 1.417216 mbytes in size.
I got my main files from here: Download starcontrol 2 builder : http://www.crusaders.no/~joker/sc2x.rar
however, I couldn't find the movies anywhere. I did find them on a mega upload site, but after messing around with this set and that set, it either didn't load at all (black screen at startup) or tile thru the slides to the menu and just repeat.
I'll try another .xbe file I found, but do you have a link to which one that does work? Nope, it still does the same thing. The only site that is active here is the joker one.
Thanks.
-
I got all my files from the same site as you. There was the pack of stuff, then a XBE by itself.
-
All there is now is a simple rar batch file, and the default.xbe file.
Do you have a date stamp on your default.xbe file? Which one works?
-
Its the same one you have, exact same one from that site.. I just downloaded it a week or so ago.... so the date should all match up. I noticed that mine messes up if I play the main game.... but I just avoid that since all the videos are gone and everything.
-
Well, I checked out everything, and the game starts up with the slide show, but as soon as it gets to the menu to start a new game, super melee, etc, nothing. It waits there for a couple of minutes, then the slide show starts again from the beginning. No way to stop the slide show either. No button or joystick does anything on my game pad. I've tried a wireless one, and corded one. Like I said, I did manage to find the files needed, but the game looks like it's waiting for a keyboard input, not a controller one.
Weird.
My xbox is softmoded with SID v5. It's a Kernal 1.00 version V1.1, dashboard 1.00. 250 GB hd installed and XBMC 9.04 installed. I did find the content, music & voice files needed, but not the movies.
I'm stumped on what else to do?
