These recent threads about doable emulators have encouraged me. I don't have enough skills to port these emulators to Xbox... but I am thinking about making another alternative: I can compile the sources in Linux, and I will create a DVD image that launches the GentooX loader (the one used in Xmugen) to launch Linux and automatically run the emulator!! So, I think that it can be doable to have a DVD with the Linux launcher, the emulator, and the roms!! It is worse than porting an emulator, but it's the best that I can do.
So, I have downloaded one Xmugen from the RessurectionXtras team (the Anime one) and I have a little problem burning the image: I extract the files of Xmugen to my PC, and after that, I burn them in a DVD using Nero. I use the UDF/ISO format as recommended in the readme and the forums, and I mark the checkbox about "force Xbox compatibility".
Well, Gentoox loads OK and it gives me the chance to choose if I want to load from CD/DVD, FatX, or Network. If I select CD/DVD, I get the error asking for a boot disk. If I select FatX, then the XDSL that I have installed in my hard disk is launched.
I have read lots of forums about xmugen , and many people had the same problem than me, but they were able to solve it. I have tried every advice in these forums, but I keep having that error. So, the only thing that I must ask is: how must I burn the CD/DVD? The forums only talk about using Nero and mkisofs, but I don't know how to do it exactly. I have used Nero as I said above...
Big thanks in advance! If I manage to do this, Xmugen will not be the unique software that can be launched in this way (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Also, there is very little point to attempting to run Linux-based emulators through Xbox Linux since it will be WAAAAY slower than running the native emulators. It's not worth the effort and has been done before several times.

Well, maybe it can be usefull to emulate old machines. Of course, I am not talking about emulating PSX, N64 or Sega Saturn (not even Sega Pico, hehehe) but we have talked about several old machines that have not been ported to Xbox. As I cannot port them, it is the only thing that I can do. Maybe it is usefull to emulate machines like PC-9801, PC-8801, Commodore 16/+4, RCA Studio II, and so on...
It's true that a native emulator is much faster (it can take advantage of the hardware of the Xbox) but when trying to emulate an old machine, maybe launching Linux to use the Xbox as a generic 733 Celeron, can be enough. Or maybe not, but someone has to do the test, and I can be that "someone". These are my two cents. Well, if someone has tested it before, let me know to avoid re-doing the same (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Besides... I would like to play mugen too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

also in disc juggler do:
Advanced tab> mode> select mode 2
and
TOC: cd/dvd
and again tick "RAW write".

epsx is the more stable (and compatible) ps1 emu; i know there s a way to run it via xdsl but its a real pain in the ass.
With your trick we could have an executable (even if it long to boot no pb) it will allow us to play valkyrie profile and star ocean
!!

Well, in fact I am working on it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) My goal is that: building images that will make easy to run Linux emulators in Xbox, in an automatic way. I am creating now my first one (it is a PC-88 emulator that loads automatically). It does not work yet, but when I achieved that, I think that making images for every emulator will be easy. Please, be patient, and I hope to give you news soon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
By the way: thank you very much dballs!! I have discovered another easy method to do it: open the xmugen image with Ultriso, deleting the mugen folder and replacing it with the one of the emulator that we want. And after that, burning with Ultraiso with the SAME settings that the original image has (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

On one hand: I picked a very simple emulator for my first test (the PC-88 one). I generated the executable for Linux in a PC and I tried to launch it from Linux in the Xbox. Sadly, the executable does not work because it needs that the system had some libraries installed (the "GTK" ones). And, as far as I have seen, every emulator needs one library or another, so we cannot use the reduced Linux image that is contained in Xmugen, because it is a very minimal Linux which contains only the libraries needed by Xmugen. So, we can forget about re-using the Linux of Xmugen to launch other emulators (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
But there is another way: it is necessary to create a new Linux image in PC that contains the needed libraries. The process is: installing a Linux in a PC, installing every library needed by the emulators, and generating an image of that Linux. Then, we can re-use the Gentoox launcher of Xmugen to launch our new Linux image, and automatically launch the emulator that we want. It is possible, but there is a lot of work to do. The good news is that we have to do these steps only once, and then we can distribute the image to everybody to launch the emulators automatically.
In conclusion, if we analyze Xmugen: the Gentoox launcher is re-usable, but the Linux image is not re-usable for other emulators. So, we must create another Linux image with the needed libraries installed.
Well... is there any Linux fan reading this? Or simply... anyone knows who is "Chips"? As far as I have read, "Chips" is the nickname of the man who made the Linux image for Xmugen. Maybe if I can talk to him, I can ask him for some advice about creating Linux images, and do it myself. At the moment, I don't have enough knowledge to do it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
