Title: Side Projects...
Post by: ressurectionx on December 03, 2009, 09:44:00 PM
If anyone would like to help with non-coding and non-video related work, there are a few side projects that I probably won't be getting around to now that could use some help.

1st, is collecting cool videos for games like the Angry Video Game Nerd reviews on YouTube, or any cool commercials and stuff.

2nd, is collecting FAQs for games on gamefaqs and editing them in notepad so they work with the newly fixed word-wrap features in the upcoming Madmab edition emulators.

If anyone is interested in helping, there will be betas in it for you.

Let me know.

C'mon people!

Why's it so dead in here.  It's snowing outside, don't ya know?

It'd be real cool if somebody could collect some of these video game review videos and edited the faqs.

Madmab already fixed the word wrap so FAQs look great after they've been altered correctly.

We're hoping to one day be able to choose the order of the videos for games too, so if there are commercials for the games or funny reviews online they can display before the game preview if you desire.

It won't work unless we have the vids though!!!!  cool.gif

I'm not asking for commercials now because I probably have about 1,000 of them already and wouldn't want people doing double work.  I will eventually get around to sorting them out too.

Thanks,
~Rx

I use all these xtras on my xbox and I love 'em.   I could help with the game faqs,  in what way do they need to be edited?  For what systems and games are they needed?

That'd be great man.   laugh.gif

Basically, we'd need somebody to copy the text and put them into .txt files.  Once there, they'd have to remove all the hard returns and extra spaces between words.  Basically, if you turn word-wrap off, every paragraph would only take up one line if viewing in notepad.

Maybe somebody knows how to remove the hard-returns and extra spaces in bulk?  I don't know how to, so it takes quite a while to get a larger FAQ for an RPG ready.

I have no specific list of games to do.  I would like to have them done for the various RPG's for the main consoles/hand-helds.  Also popular games like the Metroid and Castlevania series.

Let me know if you'd like to do this, and which one's you're planning on doing.

hey rx, good to see you are still very active,  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

over the past few months i have shifted my priorities over to finishing my nes set stuff. ive recently acquired numerous world of nintendo fiberoptic signs, world of nintendo signs, an nes test station, an m82 unit and loads of other nes memorabilia.  im only 32 titles away from the complete set and got about half of those complete!

i had been out of the loop collecting for a while but decided to focus on this for a while, as to this is why i havent been on here posting much lately. i plan on never going away from here though as id love to do some more.

i had spent the last year or 2 working on xbox stuff and needed a change of scenery for a lil while. im gonna be shifting  back over to xbox stuff. for a lil while it almost felt like work i had been doing it so much and so focused. lmao.

I have to many projects going on now, but i wrote a quick and dirty python script that can download and reformat the document for you if you are interested. It will still need some manual editing, but it will save you for a lot of time

http://prosjektet.net/xbmc/test.py

usage: python test.py GAMEFAQURL

example:
python test.py http://www.gamefaqs....le/576152/25105

output: http://prosjektet.net/xbmc/output.txt

it's something i cooked together in some minutes, so it's neither elegant or stable, but it works ok. just ask if you have questions or want some specific improvements

I've been watching the Xtras project for a while now and I wouldn't mind helping with the Game faq's.

I'm just wondering if there is any naming convention I should follow or a certain system you would like done first.

Thanks for the script z0p!

I'll have to check it out when I get a chance.

Hey ninjagaidenfreak,

No real naming convention other than the name in the spreadsheet should be good

gamename.txt will be good for all of them.

Maybe you should give the script z0p put together a few posts up and let us know how it works.

Also, why don't you send the first 1 or 2 my way when you get them done so I can see if I have any further suggestions.

Very excited to see what you can come up with man.  Whatever games you'd like to do for whatever system are fine with me.

Sounds good Rx I'll get you some as soon as I can weekends are my busy time so I'll probably have something for you Monday or Tuesday, still working on a good work flow.

The python script is nice but its kinda situational on what faqs it will work on.

Looks like a lot of them I can automate via simple search and replace strings.

I let you know once i get a better idea.

i was also thinking about deleting the controller setups in the guides for some faqs as they don't really work all that well.

and also use the shorter basic walkthrough for games as well because most of the time the formatting for the item list won't work that well and when playing a game I tend to go to them more for when I get stuck.

I would be interested on hearing others views on this subject though.

I think all of that other stuff would look good if we could get a true "fixed-width" font working with the FAQs and other text files in the text file viewer.  Unfortunately, the "fixed-width" that the emu uses now isn't really what it says it is and nothing lines up right.

Bottom line, these are for you and you're sharing them with us.  Do them the way that you'd want them to look unless we get that fixed width font working or anyone has any better suggestions.

Thanks a ton man.  This will be a very valuable feature and hopefully if people see what yours looks like they'll be inclined to do some more of their own and share.

Here is a small amount of them to preview, let me know if anything needs to change.

They do need to be proofed again and I plan on doing that when I have a good amount done but this should give an idea what I plan to do.

I think I found a way of automating the process to the point where I can do a hundred or so a day and maybe even more if I can get the script I'm working on a little better.

All I need to figure out now is how to do batch file conversions in open office to grab a folder and run a macro on every file in the folder and I think I can do every game faq out there.

I have all of the A's done in SNES other then renaming the files to match the Xtras.

I have all the files downloaded up to K but its taking a while. I'll upload a big pack once I have all of the SNES faq's done.

If anyone has a tool to automate the downloading of faq's it would be a great help.

also strange on the megaupload  the link is working fine for me, let me know if you want to use another filehoster I can upload it to any of the other ones (other then rapidshare, I hate rapidshare.)

I missed this. Wow man.  Sounds like you're going to really kick ass on this.

I haven't tried the link again.  It's been pretty busy around here.  Hopefully I can take a look at it sometime tomorrow.

Thanks,
~Rx

Thanks again man... this is great!

You're really flying on this.

I'm going to check it out sometime today hopefully.  The link is working now so I'm downloading it as we speak.

Thanks,
~Rx

EDIT:  I checked them out now man.  Excellent work.  Like anything else (artwork, vids, synopsis) I'm sure it could use some tweaking here and there if somebody wanted to really dig in, but considering how many hundreds you're doing on the fly this is some top shelf stuff.

Some of the problem is that we still don't have a legitimate "fixed-width" text feature yet.  I'm sure things will look even better if that dream ever becomes a reality.

So.... is SNES the only system you care about, or do you like some of the other major ones?  I'd love to see this get to other systems someday.

Well if you don't have time for the other systems then just clue us in on your little secret for getting them.  wink.gif

Anywho... If someone could send a fixed proportion font (.ttf) file my way then maybe I can do something.  In the meantime I'm gonna look in the code, there might be one spot where some internal font is used..

That's my pick, but there are some other TTFs there that are labeled fixed width for you to try out madmab.

Res,
Are you still collecting side project stuff? like reviews, videos, magazine scans, exc?? If so, which systems and what type of content in particular? Because I have a lot of stuff that might fall into this category.
Title: Side Projects...
Post by: ressurectionx on January 16, 2010, 11:12:00 AM
Don't need any reviews or synopsis anymore for the systems I'm personally doing.  Maybe waal and Carnage by Bob could use help with that with the Intellivision and Amiga.

I would love to have complete FAQs for these systems, but I haven't heard from ninjagaidenfreak yet this year with his NES stuff and nobody else has volunteered to tackle another system.

I don't think I'll be collecting too many strategy guides or anything like that either.  It was planned in the beginning, but this project has just taken too many hours of my life.  If I can get them in before the 15th of March, they're good, otherwise I'm going to scrap them.

What... with manuals/magazines?

Not sure.  Probably only NES, SNES and Genesis.  I'm not actually looking to collect anything more at this point for those types of things, but I'm looking to clean up all of my to-do folders and get something put together from there.

Nothing's "not started" though.  There's been a little work here and there all over the place.  Kinda hard to talk about since I haven't looked into it for about 1 1/2 years now and you're not sitting here looking at what I'm looking at.

It's never getting done by me, personally.

I do happen to have images for every US game, which have been renamed perfectly to XBOX specs, but we're talking re-unzipping and transferring 100's of GB to the box for testing when I already know more than half of them don't work as designed on the XBOX.  I do have a sizeable collection of boxart and videos that I will try to put together.  It just won't have all the screenshots, and I won't be doing a synopsis for the PSX either.  At least not for games I won't have on my own box, anyways.

You should put together what you have and let others build upon it if they have interest.

I personally think a best of type PSx would be cool... only put games on there that got an average rating of lets say ... 7/10? or something like that... that would make it possible and then you could leave it up to everyone else to fill in the blanks...

I would help with this if you start it... I am a fan of PSx

also, do you have the preferred list of games which would go into Xtras?

Sure... there are a ton of them in the "Hot Potato" thread in the XPORT forum.  None of them are completely up-to-date at this point, but the NES one should give you a real good idea of what they're supposed to look like.

I don't have a list of games to include now.  I'd say any RPG out there, X-COM, Intelligent Qube, the Mortal Kombats.

Hey guys.
I really like the scope of this project and I'd like to help out if possible. smile.gif
If you still need the AVGN videos I too have the DVDs, but I can also try and DL the videos from his site if that will do?
The reviews that are on the DVDs are edited and have all the copyrighted stuff removed, like scenes from certain movies or music that is licensed.

I'm currently in the process of getting his videos from YouTube in MP4 format and going to try to get the newer videos from ScrewAttack as well.

Let me know what you need.
Title: Side Projects...
Post by: ressurectionx on January 17, 2010, 08:58:00 PM
Hey dpolsrod... sounds great.

I'd rather use the non DVD stuff, not just because of all the stuff that's cut out of the DVD's but if we're just ripping YouTube vids then it's not like it's stuff that wasn't already available for everyone to see for free anyways.

We'll need them in WMV format, so you'll have to convert them from MP4.  You'd have to send me a test one to make sure I can then convert it to XMV.  Sometimes the WMV to XMV converter won't work on some WMVs for whatever reason, so I'd just like to verify that they're encoded right before you start doing a whole bunch of them.

If you want to download everything, that'd be fine, although I don't know how we'd display the videos for non-game stuff.  We'd probably just have a "game review" folder specific to a system and dump them in there to be viewed in the media browser.

This doesn't have to be limited to just avgn.  I know there are some other good game reviewers out there, but I can't remember their names now.  The media browser function will be great for displaying any of this.

I don't know much about resolutions or bitrates, so you'll have to make that decision on your own.  I would download the newest Madmab Edition NES XPORT emulator at the usual spot and try them out for yourself.

Get me a few testers to look at too.  We'll figure it out.

Not that I have anything to say on how this project should run, but i feel that even though you don't know how to use some of the xtras in the first release i see no point in collecting additional stuff for future updates smile.gif

I think gathering AVGN videos would be a swell idea. I even think the guy behind AVGN would be up for sharing his work for a huge project like this if he was asked smile.gif

To my understanding, he has an "exclusivity" deal with GameTrailers, meaning he can't "allow" other people to distribute them (even if GameTrailers themselves do it for free). Apparently this only applies for a year or two after he makes each of his videos, after which time he posts 'em on YouTube.

It would be cool if someone could rewrite the core to implement other folders in the game selection menu like "reviews".... that way if you are thinking about playing a game you can check out the review...

is that a big edit on the source code to do something like that? I'm not really sure what is involved in adding this feature, if its just a simple edit or if countless lines of code would have to be put into place?

I don't believe that has anything to do with the source.  That sounds like the menu type tweaks that Madmab has been doing for about a year and a half now.  That's the type of thing that Madmab and I are discussing for the Media Browser.  Never really had a reason to persue it too hard before though since there weren't any reviews archived on my part.  I have a ton of commercials I plan on getting around to though, and I'm sure there are a lot more out there.

I wasn't sure if there being a video player in the first place would cause problems with loading another video player to play the review, and then go back to the original video player.

but you guess should make room for expansion, even though you may be fed up with it now, after a break you might feel like adding on to it.... and what if MadMab vanishes like all the others and you have no one to make the tweaks?? THINK OF THE UNMADE TWEAKS!!!!!! haha

Post by: ressurectionx on January 18, 2010, 09:12:00 PM
To my understanding, all of the videos played use the same player, even the new intro videos that madmab just enabled.  All videos have to be converted to XMV, no matter the original source or the type of video.

It's just a matter of making a easy to use menu system to access these videos that is the issue.

I thought at first it would be cool to have the ability to choose the order the videos play.

For instance, if I wanted Commercials to play first, Game Reviews to play second and Preview Videos to play third then I could select that in the menu.  If there were no commercials, it would play the game review first, if there were no game reviews as well, it would just play the video preview.

Now I'm thinking it would just be easier for Madmab to code the ability to browse the different videos in the Media Browser in the Utilities, and perhaps make a menu item for the Media Browser in the in-game options and if the user wants to see any of these they can just view them that way.

I think browsing from Utilities would be a little out of the way. Browsing from the game menu by pusing in the left analog stick or something, or from the main menu in a "extras" area would be cool, I think.

In the new betas, there really isn't much in the Utilities section, so the Media Browser in that directory should be fine for out-of-game viewing.

What I want the media browser to do is have options like this:

View Commercial
View Game Review
View GameFaq
View Intro Movie
View Manual
View Maps
View Strategy Guide

Etc, etc, etc.....

When using one of these functions from the in-game menu, say "View Game Review", if there is a video in that category with the same name as the rom name, it will automatically bring up the game review for that game.  If there is no video in that category with the same name as the rom currently being played than it will take you instead to the "Game Review" folder where you can select a video.  It would work the same, or similar, for every other category, depending on the nature of the media.

For example, you couldnt' just bring up the Manual for a game automatically because they're a collection of JPG images since we can't use a PDF viewer currently.  In that case, if there is a folder with the same name as the rom you're currently playing, it will take you inside that folder for you to choose a page.

When using the media browser from the Utilities section, it would always just dump you into the main directory for the selected type of media for you to choose what you want to look at.

That sounds cool too.. I just thought the utilitys would be filled with a bunch of boring stuff, then at the bottom of the list it would be "Xtras" and have all that stuff.... I was just thinking if it is too hard to get to, or too out of the way, no one will use it and all the work that went into it will be for nothing.

What about button combo's?
Title: Side Projects...
Post by: ressurectionx on January 19, 2010, 04:26:00 AM
I don't think it's really necessary to have a button do it as long as the Media Browser is towards the top in the in-game menu where it's easy to see.  Really, there isn't going to be much point using the media browser when you're not playing a game.  When you're in the game, the Media Browser will work very well with the rom you're currently playing.

To use it in-game, you would just press the right joystick down once, and selet "Media Browser" and all the different options will come up.

Otherwise, the Utilities is the best spot for it outside of the gameplay.  The main menu is already full with options that are, in my opinion, more important for setting up the GUI and actually playing the games.  The Media Browser is pretty much by definition a utility, so it makes sense to put it there.

And besides.... don't you know that people HATE button combos?  laugh.gif

I can't tell you how many accidental game saves and screenshots I've made over the years.

Here are some samples of the first conversions.

04 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - NES
06 - Back to the Future - NES

These are from the first 10 episodes, so the resolution is 320x240.

ressurectionx, I've sent you a PM with some more info and will send you links from newer episodes as they are converted.

Yep... they're no good.  WMV2.  We need WMV8.

I sent him a message yesterday or 2 days ago now but haven't heard back yet.

I don't quite understand what happened.
I chose Windows Media Video 9 when converting the videos, but when I play them I too get WMV2 as the codec.
I have now switched to a different converter and will try to see if I can get the files encoded with the WMV8 codec.
I'll send you a message with the links once I get them right. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

It may need to be converted VIA a different method. What program are you using anyway?

I used a couple, like Movavi Video Converter and SUPER but the one I used for the newest files is Windows Media Encoder Series 9.
I used a tutorial from this forum.
I'll post the two newest videos I converted in a bit.

I'll let you know when I can get to it.  If you used WME I can almost guarantee that it worked right if you followed the instructions.

The two last videos I converted can be found here:

04 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - NES (WMV8 test)
28 - Die Hard - NES (WMV8 test)

If anyone wants to test these for themselves or check them to see if they are converted correctly, please do and tell me if they work.

Okay,

dpolsrod is all set and is getting the AVGN collected for us.

I was hoping somebody would be interested in collecting video game commercials as well.

Currently, I'm going through all of mine and de-duping them.  I'll make a spreadsheet saying which ones we have so you'll know.  The SNES commercials I have are pretty slim pickens, but I looked on YouTube and they have quite a few there that I don't have.

All ripped videos sent to me either need to be in AVI format or WMV8 format.  If they're given to me in WMV but it's not WMV8, it will not convert to XMV.  Unless you know what that means, please just send the AVI file.  There are plenty of ways to rip YouTube movies into AVI format.

Thanks,
~Rx

I will definitely take a close look at the list when I'm through organizing what I have.  It looks like I probably have most of that stuff.  It looks like your standard mass-download fair.  I've actually combined about 10 torrents to get my collection to where it is now.  There were MANY duplicates in there, and I always made sure to keep the best looking/sounding ones.

I'm sure there's some stuff in there we can use though.

We're definitely going to need somebody to rip vids off of YouTube at some point.  Who's going to do it so I have one less thing to do?   cool.gif

If people supply me with youtube links I already have a youtube-multi-scraper finished ready to roll.
EDIT1: if someone has the time to collect 13161346 youtube links for me i'll scrape them all in one go.
EDIT2: before i gave up my own project i downloaded 2387 youtube videos from links with gameplay tongue.gif
EDIT3: links could be any "format":

Boy these commercial videos are a ton of work.  I've been at it all day.

I'm merging about 6 new t0rrent downloads with the hundreds of videos I had before.  TONS of dupes in many different sizes and file formats.  I'm doing my best to select the best ones and to go with AVI when I can since I know I can convert the AVIs without a problem.

I have two questions for the group, regarding videos:

1) Now that wimpy has made a scraper and only needs the links for the missing videos, would somebody be interested in collecting the links on YouTube for the missing videos?  I'd only be interested in videos for actual games, so don't be scared that you'd have to try to find "system" or "other" videos and try to figure out which ones are which.

2) Could somebody tell me what the best (easiest) way to convert flv, mpeg, mpg to either AVI or directly to WMV8 so we can get the oddballs on the Box?

Thanks,
~Rx

Sounds like a huge task!
I think that you guys are going about it the right way and I am glad you are gonna weed out all of them with the highest quality ones.
My only fear is that "youtube" has been know to have the crappiest quality videos (although it has gotten better within the last year) smile.gif

How big are these "commercial packs" gonna be...? 1TB each...? tongue.gif
Keep up the good work.

There's actually not too many commercials when you weed out the clones and consider I'm only doing systems that I'm covering in the Xtras project.

So far, the commercials I have in pre-WMV format are 1.79GB.

Carnage by Bob hooked me up with a link for a trial version of VideoCharge Studio.  That program is awesome.  I'm bulk converting every single file to WMV8 right now, in all the sub-folders, no matter what the type of file the source is.  I've already tested a few converts and they work flawlessly with the WMV to XMV converter after the fact.

I'll have a list up here by tomorrow with all of the commercials we have.  Then I'm going to move on to other things in hopes that somebody will decide they want to collect any links for missing commercials for wimpy to scrape from YouTube.

Tomorrow I begin re-converting all my WMV files to XMV.  Using the "-c" option, I can reduce the size of all of my XMV files by about 30% or more.  I should have listened to MM?, cbagy and others when they were doing this months ago.  Would have saved a ton of time and space.

PLEASE HELP WITH THE YOUTUBE COMMERCIAL COLLECTING!!!!!!!!!

I just went through your list and I don't believe that I'm missing anything from that except for a few foreign PS1 commercials (which I'm not worried about).

I know where he got his commercials from.  Seems he had the very same packs I downloaded the other day, as well as the packs I've had since 2007.   cool.gif

Thanks for giving me one last verification though BB.

I'll get that list up soon for YouTubers to try to add to.  Carnage by Bob already says he wants to help out with the Atari stuff.  We got any NES/SNES/Genesis takers out there?

THANKS!!!!!

fixing some genesis now. i'm not able to convert them but i'll collect some links quick and scrape and make a megaupload file.

edit: alot seem to be japanese.. will include them now since they are scraping already, but do we want those aswell ?

The more Japanese commercials I see, the more I want to say no.  If they're humorous, either intentionally or unintentionally, I say keep them, but if they're just boring ads that you can't understand we should probably just skip them.

Most of them are going to be pretty bad/unwatchable by an English speaking audience.  There are some hilarious exceptions though.  Two of my favorite commercials out of the whole pack would be the Hong Kong Atari commercials and the SNES Legend of Zelda commercial.

The guy from Hong Kong singing "Have You Played Atari Today" sounds like he's going to decapitate you with his samurai sword if you don't play Pac-Man NOW.  The Zelda one has someone dressed up as Link (who may be female) in front of a dance squad and they're like the Fly Girls from Hyrule.

Use your own discression, and don't send me a bunch of boring Japan crap to sift through  cool.gif

Hehe I just did a quick check on youtube (actually working on some other stuff but wanted to perfect the scraper) so I uploaded a small bunch of commercials (flv format i believe). link in the other main thread.

see if the result (not if they are jap or not tongue.gif) is ok to work with so i know the scraper is ready. (and yea i know the filenames suck ass atm. will fix that).
