I found this on youtube, cycling through large icons of machines you're emulating, thought it looked great...

the only thong that springs to mind when i see that is xbmc when you use the big icons and can scroll left or right.
you can even set up xbmc to boot straight to your emulators so it would have the desired effect.

just have a look around the net im sure there is plenty of images/icons or whatever you can find.

I couldnt find anything I liked, so I decided to make my own.

What size (in pixels) would be good for 'big icons'?

edit - what i mean is, when i googled i found 128x128 as the standard, with 256x256 at a stretch, this just seems way too small to achieve what this guy has achieved

im not sure maybe you should read up on some of the stickies in the xbmc forum,you might get some answers there.
