To the 3 of you who don't know, Zsnexbox is an Xbox port of the legendary Zsnes emulator. Ported by nes6502, this port has seen an impressive amount of updates in the short time it's been around. With more and more features added every release Zsnexbox is becoming a serious choice in the Xbox Snes emulation scene.
As of this writing, the one area Zsnexbox is lacking is in the skin department. There are reasons for this. Zsnexbox GUI has been adjusted in many versions, new Zsnexbox releases are frequent and the port itself is very young. Skins have been posted from thread to thread but its been scattered and many of these skins are already obsolete.
More and more people are starting to talk about skinning Zsnexbox and this is where this thread comes in. This thread will serve as full discussion and submission thread for Zsnexbox skins of all versions. That's not to say we're all going to sit around making 1.3 skins but if there happened to be a 1.3 skin that you liked, this is where you could request that the original author update their skin to reflect the current version of Zsnexbox. Also in this thread, feel free to ask for feedback on your skins, give suggestions to those asking for feedback, give open suggestions to skin artist, make GUI suggestions (skin chooser ect) and anything else related to skins.
As of now, this thread will probably start out slow. As long as we keep all skin related matters here for all releases of Zsnexbox I think this could become quite the collective resource. The more people who get involved in this thread the more inspiration will be thrown around and the more will be made. Granted, I doubt there will be millions of skins for this one emulator but who knows? It's all for fun, to show of your skills and fluff in the end. If this thread doesn't get used, oh well but it would help keep the Zsnexbox release threads a bit cleaner if nothing else.
Here's what I've collected so far from searching around. I wouldn't be suprised if I missed anything so feel free to add to what I have. This is for all versions remember so not all of these will work in the current version, hopefully a good many of the original artist will check in.

nes6502 has included latest PSD for Zsnexbox v2.0 with the emulator.
With the help of Thraxen and nes6502 I might be able to keep an up to date link on this post.
nes6502 does not think there be many more text adjustments in the GUI for now, meaning skins may not become obsolete due to spacing for a while if at all anymore.
Let me start of this thread by saying Wesker of speksnk's theme was an instant favorite of mine and if Kanyero happens to see this perhaps the word could be spread to him that I would love to see an update to his skin. (I don't speak the language)
Have fun and keep the critism constructive.
-
I will start including all the PSD files in future releases and/or upload them somewhere to aid skin developers.
-
I'm working on a skin to go with my logo, (the one in nes' sig) It may be some time until I finish it though. I'm working in France at the moment for the next month or so and don't get much free time.

Nice topic!
I did mention my interest in make a contribution with skins and icons
few time ago (we were in the 1.3 version I think). Now I see the correct
time has arrived.
May I just post here JPG shots plus the PSD files (on a link)?

Well,
I just started something more elaborated, but for now
let me release the ones I am actually using.
Clean, simple and direct skins.

I'd plug http://xbox.nugnugnug.com as the perfect permanent hassle-free host for all such skins. It's currently the host for the box covers. guybird has just added more box covers for your SNES enjoyment as a preview of things to come. This site lives for hosting emulator add-ons. Hit it up.
-
Hey Cospefogo do you think you could do a forrest green like those?
-
Mister Dohopoki,
It's done! A simple with forest color, and another simple using Hyrule's Forest theme (Zelda 3).
Please note these are very quick and siple skins. I am thinking
in something different dow here to release soon!

Forest

Hyrule

Long live to Nes6502!

Very nice, I like the simplicity and I also have an idea for a full theme I will share later, tomorrow when I get back.

I'm going to wait on that idea for a while.
Meaning there's something I need to find that I thought I had on hand and something I need to make that might take longer than I planned.
-
I would really love a Megaman skin. Should be really
great with the projectx (http://www.zebox.com/projectx/)
remixed tracks as BGM.
-
As a note, i obviously don't have much image editing, even less skinning skills, but here's some rombrowsers i've personally been using for zsnexbox.
Basicly all i did was resize some cool snes-related images i had collected to 648x480 so they look nice.
First one is a very nice retro art piece about super mario bros.

Second is about the oh so great Super Metroid, i love this one.

Third is our buddy Fox from Star Fox. That one i haven't got to use yet, so the main fox picture may be too hidden by gui items to look nice since it's in the middle.

I understand that this is no doubt a very n00bish question but... the GUI on Zsnexbox doesn't fill the whole of my screen but the video adjusment fills the screen for the games - even if I set it to 720p mode [as I'm using the HD leads]. Is this normal?

Yup. There is no way to resize the GUI background images. The GUi images fill my TV perfectly but since all tv's are different, it may not fill other tv's perfectly
-
Dont get me wrong, I can live with. Its just that the GUI has like a 2-3 inch black border around it. It just seemed wierd that it doesnt even nearly fit the full screen. Im running it on a 42" plasma display. Not that that should make any difference as the gmaes run full screen.
-
I also run on a 42'' plasma and it has black borders around the GUI. Hopefully it will be possible to fit the screen in a later release.
-
I would suggest to any of those having problems to search google on how to acess the service menu of your tv. all moderns tv have it, and will usually allow you to fix the image to your likings.

I can't see how that would benefit us at all, thanks for the suggestion like. You see the GUI on everything else [XBMC, EVOX, UNLEASH, AVALAUNCH, DVD2XBOX, MAME, APPS, GAMES...] is perfect and fits full screen, so if I tinkered about and adjusted the plasma displays default settings then it would in turn throw everything else out.
I think we somehow need an option in the GUI for Zsnexbox to be made so you can resize it. I can live with it as it is now, but I would be grateful if such an option could be implemented.

all xbox games are made to be "bigger" than your tv, so actually you do are losing some image.
same with all the other apps you mentionned, or you adjusted them.
again, best is to go to service menu and adjust (use a game if you wish). then reset all your homebrew apps to default.

Does anyone have any leaves pictures? Not camouflage but green, computerized and paternized leaves? I had something I wanted to scan for this but it seems to have been boxed up and put in the closet of no return.

Here you have the template, it is not exactly the same but it worth checking.

We really need Neverwill to make a high res skin for zsnexbox, like he did for surreal64xxx; his are the best.
I know he made an early skin for an early version of zsnexbox, and said it was just a quick sketch, and that he'd make a complete skin when he got back from where ever he was going.
Neverwill, if you back yet, please make us a Zsnexbox skin.

I just uploaded my DKC themed full skin to http://xbox.nugnugnug.com
and for now to

There's some small details that didn't come out as well as I wanted and some strange effects I didn't catch till way late but I'm satisfied with it for now. I may work with it I may not.
Here's just the rom browser

I'm still a bit confused as to what you mean here - and forgive me if I'm just plain stupid!
If I found out the service menu to re-adjust the screen calibration on my plasma, then re-configured it to be best optimised for a game [that is bigger than the screen anyway] then surely due to the problem I am currently facing with Zsnexbox being too small on my screen [and not filling it] this would then make it even smaller on my screen and the black borders around the GUI even bigger. However, if I optimise the screen to fit the GUI for Zsnesbox then this will have the reverse effect on my games, they then would be waaay too big for the screen and be cut-off?
I'm sure I'm just a bit baffled here, but I don't understand what you mean. Sorry.

shit =] sorry, i replyed whitout reading your problem completely.
My point stands, but it is what worked for me, with my old relic of an 4:3 tv.
Once i adjusted my screen proper i never had any other problems in homebrew that you cant adjust (yet) like zsnesbox or doomX.
It would seem your problem is due to the default gui size in zsnexbox not being optimal for 16:9 tv's.
In any case nes6502 said he will implement the feature, so the point is moot.

What is the native resolution that looks best on a TV screen?
I assume 640x480 px ?

I wouldn't mind working on this actually. I really liked how surreal 64 xxx turned out (the whole style felt VERY nintendo 64). So my question is, should I stick with the darker green and black that I did originally back for v1.4 (based off of the color scheme in nes's logo) or should I brighten it up and make it, I don't know, funner (if you want to call it that
)?
I'll see what I can do, I'm not making any promises as of yet though.

I personally would love to see one more funner. But the other design was very cool as well.
Also, I would be happy to remove the text for Start Game, Options, etc... if anyone could make a skin where the text showed up clearly and sharp. I tried putting the text in the Rombrowser, but my photoshop skills are poor and the words were not sharp and clear
-
QUOTE(escape75 @ Jul 10 2006, 04:00 PM)

Ok I'll work on a test skin ...
Btw, did you notice my question about offset and size of the preview window?

Also which skin resolution would look best on screen - I know that 320x240 would
display but get resized up, and 1024x768 would get resized down, etc, etc.
Which resolution would not get resized, or at least which one is closest to native?
Thanks!
I'm not sure I could provide any usefull information about the preview default size. The coordinates are in 3D space (X, Y, and Z values) and I don't know what they translate to literally to a 640x480 image in pixels.
All the background images are mapped to a 640x480 Direct3D texture, so there is no need to make them bigger or smaller then 640x480. I tried a higher resolution but I couldn't tell any difference. I think Direct3D resamples the image to make it fit the 640x480 texture dimensions.
What would be very helpfull would be if anyone could modify the psd I included with the 2.0 release and send it to me with sharp/clear text beside the buttons (not the image but the psd itself). I don't care what it looks like. Only that it shows up as clear as the text does in mednafen-pce (on the rombrowser) for example on my tv.
Alternatly, if someone could point me to a tutorial on making text so it will show up clearly on my tv, then that would be great.
If I can get a psd with clear text I will start using that in furture releases instead of the text that is used. That way skin designers will have more freedom.

I'd like to figure out the text and then I can make a .psd
... maybe you could even start using the replacement skin
as the default zsnexbox skin in the future

Thanks again!
I'm not sure if I follow. To figure out the text, all you really have to do is open the rombrowser.psd in the media folder and put the text right beside the button images.

Beautiful, that would make some things a whole lot easier for what I'm doing. Also, is there any way currently to disable the semi-transparent black overlay that appears over the 'controler.jpg' image in the options menu? (I would like to see the full color of the image I'm making, instead of it being blacked out slightly) This would apply to any other menu that does this as well.
-
The reason i did that was because it can be hard to read the text when it overlaps certain parts of the image (in the default ZsnexBox images). Maybe I could add an option to turn that off.

That would be nice, but if I'm the only one who needs it don't bother if it's too much work.
Also,
What is the 'options.jpg' image used for, I notice the actual options screen uses the 'controller.jpg' as does the ingame menu (right thumb stick click)?

Very nice. I personally would like the S to be lower case or all the letters to be upper case or upper case Z and B but that's just my preference (feel free to ignore it)
Will that options screen be used for all the option screens? I don't think there is enough room for the controller config. It would be great if I could get the options to fit under the blue title bar.
I like how the option screen overlaps the rombrowser.

Honestly, the green/black skin was ok, but maybe go for something else in "dark" colors.
For example i think your "game On" skin for XXX is absolutely amazing, something based off grey/white/black could look really good.
Doesn't *have* to be based around the colors in nes' logo.

update--(should I be starting my own thread, reason I ask is it seems I might be flooding this one with things that aren't actually downloads).

I would also include a slightly different image that would accomodate for the taller japanese box art.
@nes- The only menu item that doesn't fit properly into the options screen is the 'gui options' menu, everything else fits fine, including the controller options. I could shrink the size of the blue bar at the top, but that just makes every other menu item look kind of funny.
What does everyone think of the more cartooney look. I always thought it fit nintendo better.
Anyway, @XaRaNn, game on turned out to be actually one of my least favorites haha. It seems that while I'm working on something I'll think that it's awesome, then as soon as I release it I think that I could have done better.
I could easily change the color scheme of this to be darker. Plus, originally I didn't mean that I HAD to stick to the color scheme of nes's logo, just if everyone was crazy about the original (for 1.4) I could keep up with that. I guess I could always release two skins.

GameOn is definately my favorite XXX skins, but ive used and really like the mario3d, and the zelda ones like skullkid and a deku one too if i recall correctly.
ANYWAYS a bit slow today, my last post was made whitout noticing this thread had a second page and seeing the actual progress.
The new mario/yoshi skin is very nice. When it's released i'll definately use it. The comment based on making something else darker was just based on how i liked your XXX dark ones.
If you ever feel like making one i'll be looking for it.

The nesterdc se is an amazing nes emulator by Scherzo. The dreamcast is what really got me started into emulation and homebrew on consoles.

Awesome, you're back! Now we have a pro making a skin for us.
I personally loved the Zelda/Link (color and scheme) of the N64 skin. Something along that line would be great.
Also, the skin you posted looks great; albeit a little to 'cute' for me.
-
After thinking a bit, a Super Metroid theme would be most fitting for SNES skin. IMO, it was the game that defined the SNES. That along with forest green, or dark blue color, or a mix of the two, would look great.
Anyhow, i look forward to whatever you do.

@ Foe Hammer, I might make different character variations on this like I did with surreal. Or I could make a completely seperate super metroid skin. I'm not sure yet.

Do you prefer having a bunch of characters mixed on ONE skin, or do you like to have a theme (like mario and yoshi together)?

nice link skin, im gonna use it. the bright brown colour surrounding all of the letters're too bright, tho, it needs to be abit darker to match the scroll somewhat (imo of course).

QUOTE(XaRaNn @ Jul 12 2006, 10:14 AM)

The zelda skin is amazing. very very nice. the scroll, the logo...wow. imho your best zsnexbox one yet.
You should go for a whole new metroid skin. Not sure you'll get what i mean, but Super Metroid had this "organic/metal" feel to it, wich more or less fits the more "shiny" feel of nes' logo and the black/green skin.
In any case, after seeing the zelda one i'm really hyped your doing another game themed one for what is really my favorite snes games.
Yeah, I've finished super metroid, metroid zero (or whatever it's called for gameboy) and metroid prime and echoes for GC. I love the metroid games too. I totally get what you mean.
Here's what I've got done so far, it's taken quite a bit of time because I had to completely draw the mask and everything from scratch instead of using pre existing images (because there are none of samus's mask so close up that large). The idea is to have the menu and everything appear as a display in samus's mask, or a reflection.
What do you think? Or would you prefer something along the lines of the zelda skin only with a metroid theme? Or I could pull a gamecube (metroid prime) and copy the HUD from that game so it looks like you're seeing out of the mask lens through samus's eyes. Too many options haha.

As for why I'm not releasing these yet, I'm just waiting for the next release of zsnexbox, you'll have them all then

I want everyone to know that from now on there will not be the words Start, Options, and Top of Dir drawn on the rom browser. Hope this is not an inconvenience for anyone. Thiswill give GUI designers more flexability. I am also considering removing the Games Found option as well.
If you want to keep Games Found as an option, please say so.

Looks real good. But i myself would prefer something along the lines of the zelda skin (of which looks amazing) with a metroid theme.
Keep up the good work, as i cannot wait to use them.

Ok here's what I've done in some of the free time I have whilst I'm working in France, unfortunately my modded xbox is back in the UK so they are not tested. I would love it if someone would be kind enough to do that for me and report any problems.
I'm no genious with photoshop, and they are reasonably basic, but bear in mind they have been done on a laptop with nothing but a touchpad for a mouse. I left my usb one at home,

Looks great. Along with neverwills, one of the best i've seen. Very clean looking, and high res. Definently a keeper.

Thanks for the comments, its something i started a while ago though but now that the skins can be a bit more flexible, its something I will work on and modify to be less box-like-structured. (is that a word?)

I just put this together this morning. I know that it isn't as good as neverwill's skins he has created recently, but I figured that someone might like it.
The metroid, samus, morph ball and missle pictures are all from screenshots I took with ZsnesBox. The only pre existing image i used was the background image, but I probably will replace it with something original later.

Sweet. I ended up copy and pasting a .jpg picture of samples of some font called Flower SB-Bold Italic. I'll take a look for that font, and if its it or close to it then it will be easy to just re-type ZsnexBox.

I updated the logo to have the correct spelling, colors and font to actually match the Super Metroid logo. I also changed the font and colors for the buttons text.

I say it's not required either

Although if it's kept in the same column (but below) the filenames
it might not be a big problem for skin designers.
I'm thinking .... is there any way we could make the preview box flexible ?
For example have a skin that contains a certain color code which then tells
the software to use that space as the preview box ...
That might be too hard to implement but it sure would be nice for skin designers

--------------------
----------||||||----
----------||||||----
--------------------
--------------------
Let's say the above are pixels, then |||| tell the software where to draw the preview box,
and let's say |||| are coded as (r,g,

The next release will have proper skin support with separate ini's and the ability to change the skin in ZsnexBox

I'm loving how these skins are coming out, definitely can't wait until the ability to swap skins is implemented in the gui. Guys please feel free to upload any of the skins you create to Xbox Emulation Repository. I see where dohopoki uploade a Donkey Kong Country skin which isn't shown here to the site. I'd really like the original authors to upload the skins as they should get the full credit, but if someone doesn't feel like taking the effort to and would rather I do, I will be more than glad to upload them.
I doubt that something this minor would be implemented nes, but any chance of supporting the animated gif's that Xport has? I totally have a Mario Kart themed skin in my head with the chars racing around the screen...

I posted it but not as a picture, as a link since it was a full skin. I think I'm going to redo it anyways, there were some glmishes that didn't come up on my TV or monitor that came up on some others that could've been fixed. I'd also like to redo the buttons in a more intellegent way I thought of, add the GUI words and replace the logo, with a DKish font. I probably won't do this till the next version of zsnexbox or maybe not at all because I'm no nes6502.
I should note though that I couldn't be happier with how well this thread has done.

Just so people know. The next release of ZsnexBox will not have the ability to get to the Options screen from the rombrowser. The only buttons that will do anything will be A to start the game and B for exit anf Y for Top of Dir.

Just wanted to give people an update on the state of ZsnexBox. I'm posting it here because most (but not all) of the things I am working on are GUI related. I don't want to go into specifics, but let's just say the next release will have a very "Xport" like gui. I think people will be VERY pleased with the next version if they are fans of Xport's GUI's. Great work on all the skins people are doing. I would say 2.3 is about 80% done. When I finish the new GUI, I will be releasing. However, I havn't had a lot of time lately to work on ZsnexBox, so it might be a couple more weeks but hopefully sooner.

Hopefully it's faster.
I also resized the images to 640x480. I was informed this would take up less of the emulators memory, thus not crashing larger games when you load them.

So everyone who downloaded before, re-download this release.
I can't edit my old post, but I'm going to take that file off of that other site so people can't get at it.
Sorry about all the inconvenience, let me know if this one is mega slow, hopefully it's not.
EDIT---I just tried it, it's going fast, took 20 seconds to download for me at 155kb/s.
I'll be updating my mario skin on www.xbox-skins.net to have proper image sizes too, so no crashing will occur.

640x480 at 72dpi high quality jpg. Neverwill could post the higher res versions, but I highly reccomend against anyone using them at these higher resolutions. The Direct3D texture they are mapped to is only 640x480 and it might cause some games to crash the Xbox on load (running out of RAM). This is especially true for HQ Boxart preview users. But you could allways try them and see or maybe find a higher resolution above 640x480 that might be a good compromise. When ZsnexBox is first started, turn on show available memory.
It should be around 30MB. If it is much lower then this, there will be problems. If it is 20-25 there will be crashes.

It must be that the actual textures in the images he used are low resolution then, because i do not get this with surreal64 or xports skins.
Either way they are still awesome, and the new layout is thumbs up nes.
-
HERE

This is the last time I'll post a link for this skin, I swear!
@Foe-Hammer
I originally created it very large, with high res. But nes just informed me that the images need to be 640x480 max so that it doesn't take up too much RAM (causing some larger roms to crash). It's unfortunate, and I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done about it. I resized the metroid and mario skins as well to conform to the 640x480 limit as well.

Try this image. I increased the dpi and the image quality but still kept it at 640x480. I think the real problem might be that you are using a high resolution display but I'm displaying a low resolution image on a stretched low resolution texture designed for 480p/i.
I think the only real solution would be to support HD GUI images. However, there isn't enough RAM for this.
-

Let me know if that changes anything for you Foe-hammer.

-
I was just screwing around with the high res and 640x480 images, and the high res look much better on a regular t.v as well. But like nes said, they'll probably crash the emu with larger sized roms.
EDIT--
I just tried loading 'Yoshi's Island' with the higher res images installed on the metroid skin, and it does crash the emulator. So if you play the larger roms, then I wouldn't suggest the hi-res images, but if you don't then try them out and see how it goes.
-
Just tried the high res metroid skin.....
.....godly. I'm at a lose of words. The perfect theme and music for a snes emu.
But you are correct; i just tried launching zelda and it froze.
So i tried the lower res metroid skin and it doesn't look all that different from its high res one.
Thanks again neverwill.
-
Try launcing Zelda but without using a HQ preview (if that is what you are using) and see if it loads. I bet it will but I havn't tried it. SuperFX (like Yoshis Island) games may be another story.
I definatly agree on the metroid skin. The perfect skin with the perfect music.

Just so anyone who tries this image knows: This is an older work in progress image (of the rombrowser) and it's not the same as the one that's in the release (they look different, positioning is different etc). You will have to move stuff around if you use this image.
If you really want to play around with the images I recomend you download the high res images I linked to a couple posts back and then resize/decrease/increase the dpi to whatever you want if you use photoshop.
Just thought I'd point this out.

That's the danger of making something themed like I've done. Everyone has a game that's special to them, or a character or whatever so it's pretty hard to please everyone. I'm going to take a break from making anything new for a little while (however I'm still updating the default skin for nes6502 as well I'll be changing my other skins to conform to whatever he has in store for the new GUI). In the mean time I might fiddle with some stuff to see if I can come up with a more general skin, but like I said in this thread or the main zsnexbox thread (can't remember haha), I can't give any sort of a time line.
I'd love to see some stuff from other skinners if they're interested. I know asher posted a little while ago that he might be making something, he made quite a few for surreal that looked really nice.

I like the 360glass Skins for any Emulator made by EBear. But a Skin for ZsnexBox does not exist. And here is my idea to create one to complete my 360 Glass skins. The Pics for Background and Loading are already done.
But how can I place the Romlist to the right position ???
Here are some screenshots of my Backgrounds:
Thanks for help

Your images HAVE to be in .png format. As well make all screens 640x480.
O.K, First. Copy the Zelda skin over to your computer and rename the folder to '360' (or whatever you want). Then replace the images in the folder with the ones you made (re-naming them appropriately). And rename Zelda.ini to 360.ini (whatever you named the folder the files are in). Then upload this new folder back in to the skins directory for ZsnexBox.
In Zsnexbox you can move everything, the text and the previews etc. Go into GUI options and then Text Options. In this menu you can move the rombrowser text, the main menu text, and all of the other text in the emulator.
If you go into the GUI options, then Image Options you can move the preview, preview border, logo's and animations.
Once you have everything where you want it exit zsnexbox and go to your Dashboard. Now, FTP in and go to E:\ZsnexBox\ini and copy the zsnexbox25.ini over to your computer (it holds all of the changes you just made to your skin). Rename the copied ini to 360.ini (or whatever you named the folder your skin is in) and replace the old 360.ini in your skins folder (on your xbox) with this new one. Now the changes will be saved even if you switch skins.

Thanks for your quick reply...
My Skin is finished, but I have no folder namend ini. and I do not have a zsnexbox25.ini. I use Zsnexbox 2.6.
Another problem I have: I want to replace the icons of Surreal64xxx/ZsneXbox in the dashboard with icons I made myself. For all other emulators I created the default.tbn myself but the pictures of the icons from Surreal64xxx/ZsneXbox are integrated in the default.xbe. How can I delete the icon in the default.xbe or can I adjust the program that the default.tbn is loaded?
I think there is the possibility to compile it when I download the sourcecode. Download is no problem, but I haven't got the skill to compile it myself.
Can you help me again???
Thx

There is no folder called ini
Copy the ZsnexBox25/26/27, etc... ini into your skin folder and rename it.
There is no source code available
What do your icons look like?

Here's a look at the updated mario skin included in the ZsnexBox 2.8 release (and all future releases).
Yoshi's tongue on the rombrowser is animated! As well all the logos are animated.

Hey neverwill I got a really cool idea for a skin. Maybe you could make a super mario kart based skin, and as an animation you could have the go carts racing around on screen or fighting or something like that. I found some nice super mario kart art you might like.
