Title: Will The N64 Emulators Ever Be Perfected?
Post by: dohopoki on May 01, 2006, 05:54:00 AM
If you're talking about for Xbox, perfect N64 emulators for PC would be a big help to start with. Problem is, there are no perfect emulators for any system and I would personally say there aren't even any good N64 emulators, yet. Not to take away from the people who code emulators for 64, I know it's not nearly as simple as some people would make you think (people don't know the first thing about emulation).
Yes, the xbox emulation scene is still alive but I really shouldn't have to answer that for you.

I would suppose the answer you're looking for is this:
N64 emulation is not 100% finished and perfected by any means. However, it is a superb way along, and obviously we all reap and enjoy the software to its [current] fullest capabilities. N64 emulation improves by the furthered work of the coder(s), and increased understanding of the hardware that is being emulated attained by the coder(s). So, there's still more to learn, and still more to attempt to implement to attain further progress in N64 emulation.
Now, the aim for emulation isn't necessarily speed as you assume (playability on everything), but rather perfection (for it to run everything frame-by-frame as it should). Possibly better explained, to emulate every last facet of the hardware under consideration - in this case, the N64. Obviously, this is quite tricky! Now, although being a relatively powerful console, the XBOX does chug when using high-end filters on the N64 emulator, and it always will. However, the xbox clearly can provide playable framerates, and can very much be fun! The hardware limitations exist, but they aren't so severe to keep you from playing. This means that there are also many software limitations, or "bugs" as you want to call them, to work out. Theonly way this is fixed is mentioned above. So rendering/sound problems are not a result of xbox deficiencies. But don't make haste to call the coder(s) deficient in any way! They are working hard and doing a spectacular job. All you can do is either lean a lot about programming and the system's hardware and help with the code to speed up the process, or just sit tight and enjoy what you have now.
I hope this is what you were asking, and I answered your question.

I'm actually quite impressed with the current quality of N64 emulation on the XBOX, but then again, I'm a cheap drunk when it comes to stuff like this. I can play Mario 64 & Waverace at full speed, and they look beautiful, which makes me very happy. Sure, I wish that some games were playable that are not currently, but I'm sure that in time if the interest is there along with the technical documentation, said games will be playable as well. N64 emulation on the Xbox is a real treat for me, because my PC isn't powerful enough to run any of those emulators. In closing, thanks to all the emulator authors/porters that make N64 emulation possible on the Xbox.

Project64 would still have some hefty memory requirements I'd imagine, as it does in its current incarnation within Surreal. I hear the compatibility and functionality is extremely improved with 1.6 already, who knows what's to come. I'm of the opinion that this Mupen64 should join the cast of Surreal's emulators...could be a silver bullet for those stubborn incompatible games. A new Surreal would probably require a motivator like brand new Project64 source though. Heh maybe if it was heady enough code X-Port would bang it out a v1 one night.

You probably want High Level Emulation. Like HLE...emulating but cheating while you do it to speed things up. That's why Mario and Goldeneye work so well with "emulator choice 2", UltraHLE. I don't think anyone's working on hle for N64 now that hardware is fast.

Ultra HLE seems to run most games slower on my xbox than PJ64.

At least with UltraHLE in Zelda OoT the shops and Links room isn't fubared as it is in any version of surreal. If is wasn't for that i'd be playing Zelda on the xbox instead of the N64. No disrespect intended to all who worked/work on sureal, as it is a great xbox N64 emu.

strekship missed my point. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye: 007, and Super Mario 64 are the only games I know that UltraHLE is meant to run. Bomberman64 too maybe, this is just from memory from like 1999. Does UltraHLE screw the graphics for OOT on XBox?

Don't bother. Surreal V2 is dead and has been for quite a while now.

Noooooo! Why?.....
Is it dead for the time being (as in they're waiting for something) or is it trashed?

It's basically trashed. The main guy behind it, oDD, got sidetracked with other responsibilites and just never returned to the project (AFAIK).

I heard that Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster took Surreal V2 with them on their honeymoon to the lost city of Atlantis, and it hasn't been seen since...
But seriously, the closest you are going to get to Surreal V2 are the SurrealXXX releases, which aren't all that bad...

Everyone go nag the Project64 people is my vote. They have a fat poll up as to whether or not PJ64 is fast enough. Everyone go vote "no" and also request the release of the source when 1.7 comes out. Then someone will make a significant new Surreal or a seperate port of PJ64. I have forseen it.

I like that Chron Johnson...you're a visionary! For that - I will go vote.
SurrealXXX works very well for me, seems to be much improved over the last N64 emulator I used.
